Going to start a coin jar!

While this probably seems stupid, I decided today that I'm going to start a coin jar. Although most of the money I spend is in the form of a debit card, I still wind up with tons of change laying around my car, my house, my purse, in my wallet, and so on. HOWEVER I never even thought about putting it all in one place and cashing it in after it gets a little full.
LOL. This is all new to me. I'm thinking of using it as a short-term savings plan, and putting all of the $$ (regardless of how much it is) towards various debts I have currently.
Do you have a coin jar at home? How long do you wait before you cash it in? And what do you spend it on?

it's not negative at all. though it's not encourage 2 save money through a jar (by d bank) because it would somehow affect d circulation according 2 them. but 2 me, ur idea is helpful! (: rather than spending them somewhere, why not save them right?
i dn't hv a coin jar but i hv a box where i put them in. i will only spend them when really needed. i once spent on things in d kitchen just 2 see & say 2 myself ohh that's how i am! :D
well it feels good because they remind u something about yourself! (;

I normally spend my change. I keep it in my purse. I'm not sure I've ever had a coin jar. My sister had one full of pennies. She is six years older than me and was embarrassed about bringing it in so she had me bring it in with her so it looked like it was mine. It was only about 8 dollars worth when we went.

A coin jar is a good idea. We have one at home and wait until it's full to cash it in. Usually the money goes to extras so the main income can be used for the necessities. It's never stupid to have a little extra money. Even a small amount can cut down on expenses, even if they don't eliminate them. And, those coins add up. Especially since when you see them lying around in different places, they don't seem like much so you wind up not spending them and they accumulate.

Hi Maezee,
that is not a stupid idea at all. All that changes really adds up fast. I have always kept a coin jug. I try to see how much I can save without cashing it in. One year I ended up with 600.00 and took my daughters on an overnite adventure to the beach. I usually end up with anywhere from 30.00 to 40.00 per month. If I don't really need it then I just keep adding to it. It is good to know it is there in case of an emergency.

Let me tell you its a great idea. My hubby has been doing this for years and he will wait to the jar is full and then we cash it in. It has been on occasions anywhere from twenty-five to forty dollars in one shot. It all depends on how many quarters you have versus dimes and nickles. I think its a great way to save money for a vacation, Christmas, or for a rainy day. Good luck to you!

I have a coin jar. It comes in handy when funds get low. Good luck to you. We use ours to pay bills when funds get low, or for to do something fun once in a while.

It's not as hard to do as some might think. I hate having change in my pocket, since I do not usually carry a purse. I have a little container that I drop my change into regularly, but I do not save it for myself. I have 9 grandchildren with banks on the shelf, and I divide it out among them now and then and they have savings started. They are ages 2-15. I have recently emptied them out since most of them were full to the top, and each has over twenty dollars in them. I'm not sure, but I think I've decided to take them to the bank and open accounts for each of them so they can collect at least a little interest on it.

I was originally told to do this from my teacher in CAPP (Career and Personal Planning) back in grade 9, and I thought it was just a great idea, so I started it up. Now, I actually have coin roles set up right next to where I keep my wallet, so I can add money to it all the time, and when the roll is filled, I put it away in a box. Right now, I'm at around $150, but my biggest cash in was at $700, where I got myself a trip down to Florida for a week. I tell you, it's a great thing to do. Nowadays, I even try to spend more cash, rather then debit, just so I'll be saving up more for the future.

I keep a coin jar but I don't think I can call it a jar though. Haha! But I do put my excess coins in one place and it sometimes overflow that I have to spend some of it, especially when I need some change for fare, etc. Well, it really is convenient to have some sort of coin jar, as you call it, because it makes our lives easier and organized. And yes it does help with keeping up with our savings too. Hehe. Good day :)

I did had a coin jar last year and by the end of the year the jar got full. Good time to be full so i can have money to spend during the Christmas holiday. I used the money to buy stuff at home and for Christmas eve as well. It wasn't enough but at least i have helped at home. I never did had a coin jar this year because i had difficulties bringing all the coins in the bank and change it with bills. But it was somewhat really helpful and i had fun saving those coins as well.

That's not stupidity maezee. As they said its a starting point to a new one, start saving through a coin. I do it also but it did not going to full, I used to spend it. I don't know why but I try myself to save for my future.

It is a good idea to have a coin jar if you are collecting lots of change every day. I used to have one before. Now a days I seem to get less and less change because most of the commodities are price tagged with an amount, which is rounded off. At any given time I would have just a fistful, so I carry it everyday in my pocket and try to spend it off at the first given opportunity. No, I do not have a coin jar anymore.

i had been doing this for many years now... i always manage to get about $100 everytime i open my coin jar and cash the money out... all i can tell you is it all adds up... you can never imagine how much money you can get just from the coins alone... so it is a good decision on your part to start a coin jar... take care and have a nice day...

Maezee-
I have an apple bank in my kitchen that my older children gave me years ago that I keep just the pennies in. When it becomes full I take it to the donate change center and donate it. I keep the silver coins in the money box under our house dragon statue to bring forth more monies into the household. (I do keep four coins on the dragon itself as well). When that box gets full I change out for bills and stick the bills back into the box to attract more monies. If I need extra it's always there.

Hello,
Interesting discussion here lol. Well my hubby and I do not have a coin jar. We have a piggy bank! LOL. My hubby and I use our debit cards just like you do but there are times when we use cash and end up having penny's and dimes in the car and in my wallet. It's actually a wonderful idea to start a coin jar because you're not wasting a single penny. We started our piggybank maybe a year or 2 ago and we still haven't cashed it in nor checked how much we have now. Hopefully we'll do something smart with the money after cashing it in but I think we might just end up spending it in a restaurant to eat haha. Aside from a coin bank, recycling cans and water bottles is also a great way to earn some cash. Two garbage bags full of cans and plastic bottles usually get us to 15 bucks!

I started a coin jar last year, and opened it this year before I started my christmas shopping, it had nearly £300 in it, which surprised me as I didnt think I had put that much in it. So that helped a great deal with christmas presents. I have already started one for next year. I didnt use a jar though, I had one of those tins that you need a tin opener to open it. I think if I had been able to just take the money out then I would have probably borrowed from it as the year went on and had less money in the end. So these tins are good as you cant see what is in them and you take the money out!
