Why not donate it?

We're in the process of moving into a new facility within the next couple of weeks.
The big wigs told us that nothing except the beds will be going to the new place
We have so many books, movies, toys of kids and all kinds of really cool pictures and live plants that they are going to get rid of.
Every day when I come to work they cleaned out stuff and throw it in the trash, why not donate the books to a library and let the employees take the movies home before you trash them.
They supposed to have drawings for the furniture and other odds and end stuff.
The lady that is in charge of the comport care has thrown away bunches of hand quilted blankets and Quilts that people made for the patients.
Why don't they ask people if they would like them instead of throwing them away.
There are plenty of churches and homeless shelters that would be happy to take them.
Do you know waste full people that just throw stuff away instead of donating it to charity

That is terrible what they are doing. The first thing should have been to put someone in charge of all the miscellaneous items in the facility. All those items should have been donated to various charities or institutions where they can be of use to those unfortunate.
Plus, they also would have an advantage. If they received a receipt that said donation received for 5 quilts or 100 books their accountant can estimate what the donation was worth and it could be used as a deduction when they file income taxes.
One facility helping another. Whoever was in charge of tossing all those valuable and usable items should be ashamed of themselves. So many could have benefited from those donations.

I so agree with you.
There was a couple of times I got to work in the morning and the whole trash bin was full of movies that people donated to us but she just tossed them out cause we didn't have room for them.
I took some home of course.

One thing I don't understand and that is why when you raided the bin where all the items were thrown didn't you also take some and donate them yourself.
Since you took some home it didn't hurt anyone but will benefit your family.
But, the discussion was about donating to those who are needy and not trashing good and reusable items. Then you turned around and didn't follow your own desire and thoughts to help others.
What you could have done was box up a bunch of things and brought them to a Children's Hospital, Nursing Home, Home Living Facility or the neighborhood Library.

I don't have a car and take the bus to work so it's hard for me to carry a lot of stuff since I have other things like my purse, and lunch bag.

Sounds like that big whig felt people who donated those things were made of money. Well those people had to work long hours sewing those quilts and had to wrok long hours to get the money to buy the books, movies, toys, etc. Maybe she was fabulously wealthy but I guess you were not. I would say since she wants to throw things away, that all the employees go into the trash and take them out. Then they can take them to the homeless shelters and churches themselves.
By the way, when she sees you all do this. (Make sure that she can.) Then say that we are taking it all to the homeless shelter because those poor people there do not have much.
Implying that she of course does not care for any except herself or themselves .
Guilt often works.

I got a better idea. Call Good Will or the Salvation ARmy yourself and tell them that the faculty is moving and there is a lot of things that they are throwing away that they could use. Then they will send a truck to pick up the stuff/

hi suspenseful and missy here in S outhern California I had called both Salvation arm and Good Will back a few years when we were
nmoving as we had thrown out some stuff that they could have used.
the woman answering the p hone was actu ally insulting as she
told me"We do not send trucks out any more to pick up trash." I wanted to reach throught the phone and smack here, It was not trash but good furniture we did not have any room for in the new apartment we were moving to. I had never had them refuse me before but she claimed they no longer picked up stuff.

It is a shame that they have not been more responsible. Think of the people who would love to have a warm blanket. For that matter everything could go to Goodwill or some place like that. There are also lots of churches who do outreach and those items could be put to good use! I wish I lived there, I'd come forage the dumpsters!! I can't believe that a company is so insensitive and ignorant. What an opportunity to make a difference in the community - totally wasted.

Good question. I know when I volunteered at Goodwill I was surprised that they also threw a lot of things away. If it stayed for sale too long - it got thrown out. Such a shame

or reduced the price on it instead. I once bought an antique oak desk chair for six dollars and sold if for one hundred dollars at an antique shop as the lady told me that model was a genuine antique and worth more

Hi, Missybear, this is really horrible! I understand that you couldn't do anything alone but is it possible to unite with your co-workers and try to react? Maybe you can speak to your boss? Maybe he or she isn't aware of what's going on? Or maybe some of the people who work there have a big car and would agree to take some stuff from the bins?

Some people did take some of the stuff and they are going to donate the books and tapes to libraries.
I think it actually comes from the big bosses to get rid of the stuff, but why not let people take what they like first

ajk and missy oh my G what the middleclass homeless that just lost their jobs and their homnes need is not used stuff as they need jobb and homes first. why do people think like that oh give it to the homel;ess, have you ever been in that situation? no they need to be helped to jobs and a break into getting into apartments. they have no place to store any thing and wrong they cannot just live in the shelters another falsehood. you can only stay in any shelter for one week, thats why I am here at G old crest retirement center as I had social security and got SSI as I am an elderly physically handicapped diabetic so they take most of my two checks bu t I get to stay here with a decent room , and three meals a day, not floating on the street where people can sneer at you. two weeks of the most humiliating experience I had ever had, and I was not the only middle class person suddenly evicted just one of a hundred others.
when companies decided to cut back because of the economy or to outsource and do away with jobs here they never cared what happened to people out of work with a job market so low there were hundreds for each job.homeless people do not need stuff, they need full time jobs and help getting into apartments they can afford. stuff is useless when you have no home.

Wow, thats not good to hear about this waste full ness. It would be so nice and helpful of them to donate. You are absolutely right! COuld it be something that they are not allowed to do? For some reason? But there really are so many people that could use these things. Is there any way you could take the stuff anyways? Or maybe tell some of your friends and try to figure out who needs then and they can come get the things after business hours. The only waste full thing I know about it is that they restaurants toss all food at the end of the day that didnt get sold. I think thats really bad since there are so many people that really need food.

That is such a shame. Why are they not taking the homey things with them. Maybe, we can only hope, someone who is in need will do some "dumpster diving". I have known of large organizations that do this kind of thing. It is a waste.

The new place is nothing like our nice homy place we had .
It's gonna be more like a hospital setting and they don't want all the old stuff, they getting everything brand new.
Some of the furniture we have right now isn't even that old yet.
Those are supposed to be raffled of to the employees...we'll see

That's just disgraceful. There are many, many people who would get the benefit of those items, people who are really in need. Like you, I cannot stand to see waste.
I once worked in a coffee shop within a supermarket. The supermarket had had a major refit about a year before I began working there and different sections like the deli and coffee shop were given budgets and encouraged to decorate their section. One year on, the fancy bits and pieces, like salt and pepper shakers, ornate Italian platters and jugs, various odd coffee cups and plates and other things are being tossed out by this young thing to make room for other, newer stuff.
When you think about it, sooner rather than later we are going to be in big trouble as more and more stuff is thrown away. Where is all this "rubbish" going to go? Look at all the stock in the stores, look how much people buy then throw away. Pretty soon, there won't be any room left for the rubbish...then what?

When I was like 16 I worked at a mall in the glass and porcelain department, everything that had a little nick or scratch in it they through out.
I know they probably couldn't sell it but why not give it to us to take instead of throwing it away. I used to check the dumpsters behind the store all the time and took stuff that they threw out.

It sounds very wasteful and foolish. It also depends on how a person was raised or their lifestyle. I have a relative who cares for an elderly woman who has no financial worries and does such things. I hear many stories of how picky she is. Somethings too cold, too this or too that she throws it away. Doesn't give it to the help or has it donated just throws it away. When even if something isn't what we dreamed of if you got it for free or spent your own money on it you used it because it would be wasting otherwise.
Sadly if I was one of the folks that made those quilts I'd be LIVID! That's alot of work and time put into those blankets it's rather insulting if you ask me..

I agree 100%, a couple years ago she threw about 30 of them in the trash bin cause the holes were to big in the blankets and the patients could get caught in them,
when i seen them the next morning I was really mad. I grabbed them and everybody took some.

Hi missy~ That is very stupid and wasteful! As you said there are so many
people in shelters and other places that could have made good use of those
things that they just threw out! They should be ashamed of themselves! My
bf works in a school cafeteria and they used to throw perfectly good food
out everyday. They pay the workers mimimum wage and these people have families
and could use the food and they weren't allowed to take it home, but were made
to dump it! They finally allowed the staff to take the food home not long ago
without fear of getting fire for "stealing" what they were going to throw out
into the garbage! I don't understand how some people don't think of others before
they do things that are so stupid! So I totally understand exactly how you feel!
My bf and I make use of the food he is now "allowed" to bring home and so do the
rest of the people who work with him!

Talking about food waste.....sometimes the family thinks there loved one needs to eat even though the patient don't want to eat anymore cause they sick and dying.
All that time they spend making the food and then it gets thrown out.
If it hasn't been touched sometimes we just eat it.

Hi missybear, it is amazing how many establishments that elect
to throw away some good stuff rather than donate them...
I was at the supermarket the guy at the deli advised me that the roasted
chicken I was getting was just off the cooker...he said every so
many hours (I forgot how many he said) they have to replace the chicken.
and then asked him what happens to the chicken they take out the
case and he said "we throw them out"....It was jaw dropping to me
to hear him say that...I said why don't you guys donate it to the
churches that feed the homeless or less fortunate...he advised me
that the FDA would not allow them to do so.....I was shocked....

Throwing stuff that could be used and help those who are trying their best to provide decent shelters, clothes, blankets, materials for education to needed people and children is not moral. Nobody could consider themselves responsible citizen if doesn`t care about the less fortunate people. Sadly they are many of us who just throw the things they don`t need anymore. And the worst thing is that some of them are people in need. They should know what means not to have decent outfit to wear, or enough blankets when the weather is cold.

That's crazy! I can't believe they are just throwing it away. Maybe you could tell them that it's tax deductible...maybe they will donate it to the needy then.
I hate it when I see things like that go to waste. They threw a bunch of old tables and computer desks at work away once that I thought someone could probably use. They were still in good shape...maybe a local school or something.

Truly what a waste. With so many having so little these days, these donating items might have made someone very happy. Some child could have enjoyed the books, toys, etc.
I don't know why people waste and just throw out. I know someone that just throws things out and just goes and buys more, even though they can't afford it. Just because of the way they were raised.

I do and sadly i am related to some, hi there Missy bear hope you are doin fine today, I hav cousins and friends who throws away good food and good stuff in trash even though they are still consumable and usable, in some occasions I ask for the stuff to give away to the beggars outside of my apartment. I try to tell them but i guess hard heads need to be hit with a hammer before they understand.
