Someone, please shut me up!

I have spent the whole morning going around humming Cliff Richard's Christmas song 'Mistletoe and Wine'. This is so wrong on so many levels.
Firstly, it has to be the worst Christmas song in the whole world.
Secondly, it's not Christmas.
Thirdly, where did it come from? I swear I've not heard it on the radio or anything recently.
Ever had an awful song stuck in your head? Is there a worse song than Mistletoe and Wine to hum over and over? Should I just shoot myself or is there an alternative solution?

You have my sympathy! Currently, there is a commercial playing on the radio for a play that features the song "Sisters" and it is trapped in my head--I hate that song! One line that keeps repeating, a truly ridiculous and offensive (to me) line is "Lord help the mister that comes between me and my sister and Lord help the sister that comes between me and my man." God, I hate that song! But there it is, in my head, looping around..
When I get something like that trapped I replace the words with dee-dee-dee and speed up the tempo to make it totally ridiculous. That usually chases the tune away, at least until I'm reminded of it again. Other times I change the words, substituting in this case "doggie" for sister and "dinner" for man.
Try that and see if it helps!

Anything by Cliff Richard annoys me so having one of his naffier than usual songs stuck in my head would drive me batty. That said..."children are singing Christian rhyme..." Oh no, it's contagious... Hang on..."agaaa do do do shake pineapple ......." From the frying pan to the fire!

Try turning on the radio to get a different song stuck in your head.
I don't think I've ever heard that one.
I'd probably shoot myself if I was humming Christmas tunes this early in the season, especially since I"m going around complaining non-stop that 2 of our local stations are already playing Christmas music around the clock. Way too early if you ask me!

Haha! At Mum's I have The Christmas Collection on 2 CDs. It's full of all the 'favourites' and I love to dig it out once I'm there at Christmas...usually on Christmas Eve lol. I resist up until that point!
However, I do tend to skip Cliff so I DO know where you're coming from.
As for songs in my head..not any at the moment but I did have a naff tune (can't remember what it was off-hand) that kept running over and over again in my brain and it was very irritating.
It's ALWAYS the irritating tracks that stay with us, isn't it?

Hi GreenMoo, you must be missing Christmas huh? =D Anyway, the season is just on its way...be patient.. LOL! Guess, the song might have just pop out in your head because it is the song most familiar with at that point of time. Sometimes, me too have a song which just suddenly pop out of my head and i start humming it whole day. Hehe.. it's normal. But, since you said it is an awful song which stuck in your head...hmm...i guess u need some silence in your head so that you would stop humming. Or try listen to other musics to change the channel in your head. Have a good day. =)

It's what we call LSS or last song syndrome. The last song that you heard, over the radio or tv, and it sticks to you like toilet paper that refuses to come off your shoe. The worst LSS that I had was with a local cheesy song by a local singer who I really hated. That song stuck for days and the reason why it stuck was because I was stuck in traffic and bored and the song played on the radio. Since I was bored, I started humming along. And then the song stuck. I suggest you try to listen to your favorite artist. This one worked for me to flush out that cheesy song from my head.

The only way I know to quiet a song in my head that will not go away is to either start listening to something else or look the song up and listen and sing the whole thing. When I do that, usually there is something that triggers it, whetehr it's a melody to another song or a thought.

I just saw a re-run of Die Hard the other night on cable. And yesterday I was singing/humming Frank Sinatra's 'Let it Snow' all day.
It was so wrong too, because I hate it when it snows. I hate shoveling and I hate driving on it.
I thought I was over the humming and singing this morning, but I guess this discussion has just reminded me again.
Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go...

Don't fret, GreenMoo.
I think you have just entered that time of life when Cliff Richard has become cool and acceptable. It happens to all of us and though Many a tear has to fall, but It's all in the game....

Oh, I hate that when that happens! I get songs in my head too, and I haven't listened to music and if that isn't enough it's a song you can't stand! Then if you listen to music, you'll get that song out of your head and then you'll have another one stuck there instead! Please don't "shoot" yourself!

Oh, I know what you mean! I have repeated ones like the theme song from Green Acres! What the heck, never even really watched that show, but I occasionally hear that theme song in my head!

Hear some melodies or blues. Should cheer you up in some or the other way!
There is a study showing that they are worth hearing and also reduces stress......

When Hawksley Workman's Warhol's Portrait of Gretzky first came out, I got a part of it stuck in my head. But what made it worse, was the part that stuck, I wasn't sure what he was singing! I later found out it was "pretty bloody sexy".

My dad used to sing "horse and cabbage" instead of "horse and carriage", more to get a rise out of me than anything else. For some reason it was my favorite song when I was just a tiny thing.

I wish I could help you GreenMoo but I have spent the day singing 'Underneath the Spreading Chestnut Tree' - with actions ! and it is not even topical.
These songs must come from deep down in our subconscious and maybe you are thinking that Christmas is on the way. I've noticed that if I sing a song in a particular room then the next time I go into it I start singing it again. It is almost like a haunting.

I hate it when that happens. I have experienced it many times. Someone else is singing it. He stops and I end up singing it constantly. Or it just keeps going on and on in the mind. Well, looking at the positive, at least it stops those irritating thoughts that keep me troubling sometimes.
