How much sleep is too much sleep?

Many seem to need little sleep to get by and don't complain much about being tired. However, some seem to need so much sleep there is not much time to accomplish things beyond work and sleep. Research shows one can get too much sleep. Not calling anyone lazy, but doesn't it seem a few we have all met along the way (and not the ones who are unwell) would just sleep their entire day away if they could? How much sleep is too much sleep?

It doesn't mean that because someone sleeps a lot that he or she is getting quality sleep. And believe me bad sleep is not very helpful during the day that come after.

This is true, I just ordered some super pillow for my hubby for his birthday, he has a hard time getting one he likes.

I would consider anything more than 9 hours to be too much. I usually get 6 or 7 hours.

If I can get six or eight hours of sleep in a row I am really good. If it is broken up, like it normally is, I can barely function.

I think unless you are a baby or a teen more than 8 hours is too much.

I just heard on the radio the other day, we need a minimum of 7 hours. It is interesting how some seems to run on just a few and others need a day. There is always the catch up amount we need as well. I can run on 4 for a day, but have to catch up the next day, or you would not want me around because I am very grouchy

Too many nights of broken or short amounts of sleep and I need to catch up too with a nap in the afternoon.

@whiteream Oh so do I, that is how my kids "test" me to see how tired I am, If I laugh at something stupid, I am tired.

I don't think it can be measured in hours. For myself, I get up every morning at 5:30 AM and prefer to be in bed around 10:00 PM. I can stay in bed for an extra hour on rare occasions, but find I become groggy if I lay around for too long.

@JudyEv I have tried laying in bed longer. The longer I lay there, the more tired I feel. Also my back will start to hurt. It is much easier to just get up and start the day.

These are pretty much my hours too. I prefer to get up early. Just occasionally I'll go back to sleep till around 8am.

I overslept this morning and when I think back when I first woke I was not feeling good, so in a way I am glad I went back to sleep, the extra hour made a world of difference. I feel much better now. You are right though - it is possible to have too much sleep. Then In some respects I think we sometimes take the wrong position on sleep. I often don't sleep for more than 6 hours, but I also take 10 minute power naps in the day.

My son was always that way. But, he would stay up all night and sleep all day. Now that he has a family, he has more regular hours but he still could sleep all day if he was able to.

It is surprising how many just need or want more.

When I was young, I slept 8 to 9 hours at night. As I have gotten older, I have noticed that I need less rest. Now I sleep 7 to 8 hours, unless I am not feeling well, which is rare.

It does seem we can function on less as we age, but some seem to always be tired.

I read that sleeping more than 8 hours shows that one may be ill. I get about 7 to 8 hours a night. When I am extra tired or I'll, I have slept more than 8 hours. How much sleep to you get?

Some people seem to need more sleep than others. I think sleep is sometimes a way of hiding from the stresses and strains of the world.

Definitely, i agree. Sometimes when in too much stress or confusing to decide, i just take a short nap. Somehow miraculously, my mind becomes very clear.

Seems the teenagers and young adults are always tired. I don't ever remember being tired when I was that age. If I get between 6 and 8 hours I"m pretty happy with that.

Its because they lack body excerise or basic everyday required movemets, being addicted to tv, apps, phoes or laptop work all day. Day by day they get lethargic and loose out o health. To top it all, these days kids meal mostly include snackies, there is a need for awareness to these children.

I think I have read that over nine hours is too much if you do it regularly.

Some people need more than others, I need eight but I don't get it, my husband needs seven. I can cat nap in the afternoon and sometimes I do that, just for half an hour and it makes a big difference.

Normally I awake in 6.00 Am. I have no restrictions in my sleep. When there is any handwork I take more time to sleep.

When I get a good 8 hours sleep I always feel fresh and ready to tackle the day. Sometimes I get so busy that I squeeze in about 5-6 hours sleep. On those days I feel I am running on reserve tank.

For me, if i oversleep i get headache. Hence more than 11 hours is oversleep. Usually it depends on how tired, physically or emotionally the person is. But adequate sleep is 6-8 hours everyday.

I need 7-8 hours sound sleep. .if it gets disturbed, I can't function well the next day even after 8-9 hours' rest..... more than 9 hours' sound sleep is too much according to me.
