Here's my lunch of braised duck rice with herbal soup that I ordered for $2.50 not too long ago.
I can safely say that at where I live, simple fair ranges from $2.00 to $5.00 a meal - that include full meals with rice, noodles, meat and vegetables.
I find myself having many dishes to choose from within that price range.

Thanks I did enjoy my meal that day. I'm guessing food can be at least 3x the price there.

@Ladypeace Like anywhere, it can be cheap or very expensive. It all depends on the restaurant.

You're right! Prices have increased about 2x here from when I was a still a kid. Food prices did not experience the hugest inflation, it's houses, education, health care, cars and what not.Salaries on the other hand can't keep up with it.

This is one thing about living in Asia - outside cooked food is cheap.
i think you can upgrade to a set meal for just a couple of dollars more.
Personally I like chicken rice set meal that costs about five dollars.
I can enjoy a plate of rice with a few pieces of chicken, soup with corn or radish or carrot, and a plate of green leafy vegetables.

Yes, we love our affordable food here I do the same too and get a chicken rice set when I'm feeling hungrier than usual.

That is a reasonable price and looks delicious!! Since foods are that price is it more reasonable to eat out rather than make at home? Or preparing food at home is better?

@Ladypeace I see! I am only curious because in Asian cultures like Asia many can go out to eat (very common), and if they have a larger family - they'd cook at home for a reasonable price. Everything here, is if we go out ~ it is very costly. But then again, I don't know how to cook so generally my boyfriend and I eat out.

@Ladypeace The roast chicken + veggies with side of rice looks really good especially it'd cost you $2 per person! Great combination of protein (chicken) & healthy vegetables!!

From my own experience (I do cook a lot for my family and eat out). It's about the same price to make your own food or eat out here (provided you choose cheaper options when you are out). For example, I whipped up a simple meal of roast chicken, veggies and rice for $2 per person.

One of the joys of living in Singapore I believe. It cost me 14 euros to eat out yesterday.

Certainly one of the joys for us living here! 14 Euros a meal is a hefty price to pay for a casual meal!

I'm a fan of home cooked meals as well! I only eat out when I'm pressed for time or feeling a little lazy.

You've came up with an extremely valid point there! I find myself being able to spend around $300 on food every month. That would be about a tenth of the graduate salary here.

Thats good that you can find affordable meals your way, I spend around 10 dollars a day with breakfast and lunch and then I have dinner at home

It's nice to know that someone else spends a similar amount on food at another side of the globe.

That is very cheap. In Tokyo I am sure such a meal would be over $15.

True, my cousin who lived in Tokyo briefly told me she could find nothing under $10. One of the most expensive places to live at.

Let me describe the dish to help you imagine it's taste: sweet tasting duck with a mild herbal tone.
