Books In The Bathroom

A lot of my friends have a stash of light reading material in their bathrooms. This is so they, and guests can have short stories, comics or comic strip collections to leaf through while using the lavatory or a bath. Personally I tend to dislike the idea as 1/. Books and water don't mix. 2/. Guests will tend to linger in the bathroom longer to finish stories and features when others might be queuing outside the bathroom. Now i live alone I do often leave a book in the bathroom, and in fact my book cases are just outside the bathroom door anyway. Sometimes by bathroom reading is light and at other times it is heavy. I currently have Karl Marx's capital Volume One in there. My bathroom books are never the same books I read in general daily activity or carry with me for reading on buses and trains. Do you have / use innocent (not smutty) bathroom reading material? Arthur Chappell

@arthurchappell @pgntwo The phone is much easier to read in the little room. Best things I ever read while 'at stool' as Stephen Fry once referred to it, were two little notices pinned at eye level on the lavy door of an esteemed old spinster of my acquaintance who isn't at all the sort of person one could imagine even having a potty in her house never mind using it. One read 'Are you sitting comfartably? Then we'lll begin." The other read "In the interests of economy please use both sides of the paper".

In its day, the Rubik's Cube resided in the wee room... something to take the mind off the proceedings at, er, bowl... ;)

The Reader's Digest used to occupy that niche. Alas, the format changed several years back, so now the only thing to read is the label on the handsoap bottle on the sink.

@arthurchappell In pubs and restaurants, yes. I suspect the smartphone or personal tablet has supplanted much of the toilet-side reading matter these days...

I have never understood why people read in such a place.

When I had a useable bath to soak in, I would often take a romance or two to read and relax with. But always a book that wouldn't bother me if it got wet. So yes, light reading.

I used to leave the latest issue of Modern Drunkard Magazine in the bathroom. Drunkard.com.

That is the only room where there aren't any books.

My BFF used to do this. She was quite the reader. Never had a problem getting into her bathroom though.

I don't have them in the bathroom but I wouldn't dream of boarding a bus, coach or train without something to read.

We never have books in the bathroom. I always thought it would be nice to read in the bath but, as you say, books and water don't mix. Vince sometimes takes his book into the toilet but we have another anyway so that's not a problem.

I do not think it is hygienic to have books or magazines in the toilet. I know people do keep and use them there but I never would. I would never look at those kept in a friends bathroom or toilet either.

Yes. I always take a book with me just in case. I never leave it in the bathroom though because I find that a little weird. Or sometimes I just mess around on my phone while in the bathroom.

I don't like the idea of keeping books in the bathroom. I can understand leaving the newspaper, but I'd never leave my books in there.

My husband's bathroom is full of catalogs - Cabels's, Northern tool, things like that.

My hubby has some material in there like magazines and an odd book. I never read in the bathroom. Do you remember those bathroom joke books? When I lived in the state I remember quite a few people having these joke books in their bathrooms.

Lol, I like the distinction there. Growing up my dad kept the bathroom well stocked. Magazines, catalogues, books of all sorts. I don't like the habit myself since it leads to spending more time in there than as is needed I think

You can do what you want with your private bathroom. I think mine looks cosy and comfy with a magazine( no smut ) or two and a book or two.

Having young children tends to mean any trips to the bathroom are pretty short.
