Pull up a chair and sit awhile

I was searching for a particular photo (didn't find it) but came across this which shows clever recycling – particularly if you buy your wine in barrels. These smart tub chairs and table were in Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland, not far from the Giant's Causeway. We were given, or rather paid for, an interesting tour of the distillery and were able to have a small sample at the end. When we first moved here we had some plant pots made of half-barrels but the termites loved them and they eventually fell to pieces. I like these tub chairs though, don't you?

Those look more comfortable than the barrel chairs I see for sale here. I have photos, but I can't find them now. They are made entirely of the wood from the barrels, but only as building materials for the chairs. No padding.

@JudyEv They have never looked very comfortable to me, but they seem to sell. One of the people who makes them is a retired cardiologist. My husband was his last patient when I took him to the ER with chest pain. He advised my husband to get the stent he now has. The doctor is also married to an artist friend of mine.

I think they'd be a bit hard without padding.

What a great use for old barrels! I've seen tables made from them, but I'v never seen old barrels converted into chairs. Definitely a creative way to recycle!

@JudyEv Does the distillery sell them? Or is there a retailer that makes and sells them? I think they would be quite popular.

@moffittjc I don't think I've ever seen them for sale and these in the bar area weren't for sale either.

They are absolutely beautiful and they look comfortable too. They would give any room a lovely relaxed air. Beautiful for a patio with a little topical refreshments!

@judyev most inventive. And isn't the small sample very small at Bushmills? Still, most people who visit are driving!

@JudyEv Where the stars up above you? If not then your sample of Bushmills was perhaps too large.

Yes the sample was pretty small. I can't remember where we camped that night.

@xFiacre I think if I remember rightly the young guy giving out the samples was from Tasmania. We chatted to him later and have a photo with him so perhaps we inveigled our way to an extra tipple.

The distillery at Bushmills used to serve much larger measures - I went to college not too far away, and always managed a trip to the distillery each of my 3 years there.

@pgntwo Hey, that's cool. What does an Ambassador do? Do you work in Dublin where we went to the showroom? I hate to admit it but neither of us like Guinness. Vince likes Harp and in pubs I usually opt for Baileys on ice.

@JudyEv No, we have no termites here in Switzerland, but those that are sold in stores are already treated to be sure you do not bring home problems.

Do you have white ants (termites) there? If you do you might want to use a protective spray on the barrels first.

We know someone with a set similar to this. It must be popular to recycle these barrells. The termites are an issue here, too. Many of our garden timbers have been rendered sawdust.
