Can’t They Just Wait ?

Last night at about 9:30 in the evening, we heard all our dogs barking at the front gate. There were two men by the front gate. They were looking for my brother-in-law, who earlier went out in his car together with the boy helper, to throw our garbage at the designated place. They said that my brother-in-=law, side swept their motorcycle, parked outside too, near where my brother-in-law always parks his car at that vacant lot , fronting our house since he would always still go out at night. He would finally have it driven to our garage, once he decides he won’t be going out anymore. So my hubby talked to the two guys to wait for his brother to come back. However, in a little while, here they come again, asking for the plate number of my brother-in-law’s car. My hubby got annoyed and told them to just wait because he will surely pay the broken side mirror. He further said that we are neighbors, why would they make a blotter out of this small incident, when it will just be paid, as to whatever was damaged. So when brother-in-law came back, he apologized and gave them money which they dictated, for the side mirror of the motorcycle. Would you be like those men, make an issue out of it, when all they have to do is just wait for my brother-in-law to come back and make him pay, since anyway our houses are just side by side?

Some people are rude, may be it was not even your brother-in-law who broke their side mirror.

Well, my brother-in-law accepted it at once, so Ii think he knows he hit something when he maneuvered his car. He is an honest person. He works in a bank.

@SIMPLYD I have known several scammers who worked in a bank, but I am sure your brother-in-law is honest and it is possible he knew he hit something.

it seems like your brother-in-law was aware of the incident. why didn't anyone text him that there are people waiting for him? i agree, though, that they acted as if it was a massive hit-and-run and your brother-in-law has become a fugitive! hahaha!

Actually, he is not. He just came to know about it when he arrived. He knows it could really be him who hit the side mirror, because the motorcycle was there in a bit far place from him. Though he has to manuever going out from that place so its most likely he hit it. We didn't text him anymore, because we know that he will soon be coming back with our helper. Yes, as if it was a big amount. It was just for 550 pesos or $11 , for the side mirror.

@cacay1 No, it was just in a near place. And they have a car, so it will be just for a while. He came back , maybe after about 20 minutes after the two came back again .

Actually, one is the brother of the owner and they just came for a visit. So that's why , they thought they will be denied payment. My brother-in-law paid them what they asked , $11 for the side mirror of the motorcyle.

why didn't they complain to the barangay hall? if the amount they asked is not right for the damage, that could be a case of harassment. i believe the situation should be documented. did anybody take picture of the 2 men? or the motorcycle that was sideswiped by the car?

@SIMPLYD A situation like that I have come across before more than once. He even kept ringing me up various times of the night and three years later he had not forgotten. He based it all on that someone had said that they had seen my Hub park by him and he assumed that it was him because of the say so of someone else. This Country works like that very much afraid it does.

They are not actually our neighbors. They are just visitors of our neighbors- one is the brother of the male spouse, who is abroad working. So that's why they don't actually know my brother-in-law to be an honest man. He didn't even know he hit the motorcycle, though he didn't complain when they told him so, because he has seen the motorcycle to be there too, when he parked his car earlier on, coming from his office.

Actually the owner of the house is the brother of one of them . They go there to visit once in a while. Our neighbors are kind. I always would go there when we discuss some concerns like the street lights to be replaced when busted. We ( 4 neighbors) share on those things. So, they thought my BIL won't pay them.

If it was my car that was side swept by your brother in law, it is indeed an issue. Why? Because I was taught that when accidents like that happen it is mandatory to report it to the nearest police station for a blotter report to be prepared not because I am planning to sue your BIL but because it is required by the car insurance company so I could have it fixed at no participation cost. It doesn't matter whether it's my neighbor who did it or a stranger. It is a must.

@SIMPLYD It's not a question of whether he is honest or not. The insurance company requires a blotter report. That's my reason to have it reported and nothing else. Or else I won't be able to have my car fixed with the insurance paying for it.

Actually, my BIL didn't know he hit the motorcyle. I am sure if he knows, he would have knocked at our neighbors and told them he will pay for whatever damages because they will just be coming back after they have thrown the garbage at the place of disposal. Much more, if it is a car he accidentally hit. He will let pay for it. He is an honest guy. He is now the assistant manager of Land Bank and will be awarded a loyalty award for having been with the bank for 28 years, comes November. Those two men were just actually there at our neighbors overnight. So, they are impatient to be paid.
