Sometimes a few days away from home is exactly what you need to recharge your batteries. In our case, we chose an isolated fishing village on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand to spend a few days celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary. This place is so isolated that there is nothing much there. The school has permanently closed and the local store was closed for a couple of weeks because it's the off-season. It's autumn coming into winter here in New Zealand. There are a few local retired people, mainly those interested in fishing. At this time of year the attraction is mainly gathering the shellfish paua - known as abalone in other parts of the world. Gatherers come into the village daily at low tide to the reef opposite the house we were staying in. The photo here was taken early morning, a view from the deck of the house we were staying in out on to the Pacific Ocean. What could be more relaxing than the rhythm of the sea and completely cutting yourself off from the rest of the world!

It was almost too relaxing. I spent much of the time looking out the window.

@just4him it was very wild, rocky and wintry. But I did manage a couple of walks

@valmnz Looking out the window instead of walking that beautiful beach? That's where I would have been.

The water looks so very blue there. I like the Outer Banks in NC..it is kind of isolated in parts there too.and very pretty.

You chose an ideal - far from the madding crowd - location to chill out. Did you go to the sea to collect shellfish. My sister stays on the beach and in the good old days when I was staying with her (before marriage) we would go and collect cockles.

No, this was a rocky beach and to collect paua - abalone - you had to wade in to get them off the rocky reef.

That is a lovely photo. I would love to hear the rhythm of sea so now I will have to look that up on YouTube. It's over 700 miles to get to any kind of sea, I'm in a land locked section of Texas.

I think there's a pond about 100 miles from here, @valmnz there used to be water in the Rio Grande River all the time but it isn't always full of water anymore.

@rebelann it is so sad when waterways dry up. Some of our rivers are much smaller now than thy used to be.

I live in a land locked city, but as New Zealand is so small the coast is never far away. This was about an hour and a half drive through very hilly country.

You are right, a change of scene works wonders. Was there anywhere to eat out, or did you self cater?

Nothing there at all. Even the little store was closed. We had to take food and linen with us. Permanent population is probably about twenty or thirty at most. Most of the houses are weekend and holiday houses.

@DianneN I think a few days was enough here though. As we no longer fish and dive for shellfish, there's nothing else to do but read and walk. There wasn't even a TV.
