A sandwich and coffee with a friend

Ringnecked parrots at Pinjarra, Western Australia

On Monday on our way home from Fairbridge Music Festival, we stopped in Pinjarra, Western Australia. We had to wait there till 3.30pm to put our friend on the train that would take her back to Perth. We went for a walk to some historic farm buildings which now house a craft shop, a museum and a tea-rooms. We each had a toasted sandwich for our lunch and were taken by these parrots which were also having a sandwich for their lunch. These are called ringneck parrots because of the yellow ring (almost) round their neck. Another common name is ’28 parrot’ because the call they make sounds like they’re saying ‘28’. There are four forms of the ringneck and in our area, the birds compete for food and nesting places with the introduced rainbow lorikeet. They are not endangered and we see them a lot around our home area.

My mother hated them because they'd raid the orchard. Here is one that helped himself to one of our chips at a caravan park further south.

@hereandthere Gardeners all over the state would like to know why too. Our friend has now strung thin wires back and forth over her roses.

They are not huge pests although they do a bit of damage in the orchards. And they seem to have a new trick now of nipping off rose buds and just dropping them. Anyway, they need a redeeming factor.

It WAS a farm but is now in virtually the middle of the town. But there is space around it with lawns and gardens so it is quite peaceful.

Haha well you know you live in a tropical place when you can lunch with a couple of parrots! (My son was in Sydney, Melbourne, and Bondi Beach and loved it! He's home now- and will be going back next year through his Design company.

@nela13 We now have crows in the city who have become very bold. In some of the camping grounds there are kookaburras which will swoop in and steal the meat from a barbecue. That's getting TOO cheeky,

@everwonderwhy I thought that was probably the case but wanted to make sure. We don't have nesting boxes but we have bird baths which the birds appreciate.

@JudyEv Oh, no. They're bird nesting houses where they can come and go. That bird on the photo was on a wooden trellis in front of our window. Behind is the 'wild' bush with gum trees.

@FayeHazel Oh, I forgot about the parrots in Florida, when I lived in the Miami area, you could see them occasionally, but not often. Plus there were some that escaped from Parrot Jungle during/after a hurricane that added to the population.

@JudyEv Hm, true -- in southern-most states (Florida) they actually have wild parrots. Sometimes I over look what we have here - the Cardinals are quite nice, but so nervous of bird.... goldfinches, blue jays and the occasional indigo bunting. I once saw a painted bunting female (green)... but we are a bit far north for them...
