Is it important to keep one's promises? Does it matter whether one keeps them or not? Do you keep your promises? How should one feel about making and keeping a promise? How do you feel about people that don't keep their promises?

I keep my promises but I don't promise lightly. I have to be sure I'll be able to keep my promise before I make it. And I also keep secrets. I never, ever divulge a secret.

@mlgen1037, It is not easy if someone tells us " No words of honor." The reason is so numerous hard to elaborate one by one.

If I am not 100% that I can maintain a promise, I do not promise. I think it's very rude and impolite to promise easily and do not maintain. We already have politicians who do this all the time.

I feel as you do! Once a person does not keep one promise then they have lost the trust of honest people. Everything they say after that is suspect.

Did you make a promise you couldn't keep? I have no respect for people who don't keep their promises. I never make a promise I can't keep and that is why I never make promises. Not even a New Years resolution. I like to remain true to myself and others.

People have great confidence in my word as I am a person of my word. I also rarely make promises as I know how unpredictable life can be and I hate to disappoint anyone.

Keeping promises is so important. Usually I don't want to make a promise easily as I am afraid I can't do it. I have to make sure I can keep it so that I will say it. In general, I will just say I'll try and it is already enough for me.

That's exactly what I so as I know how I feel when somebody makes a promise and then they don't keep it. I would rather that they don't make me any promises because if they do then I expect them to keep the promise unless something serious happens and then I expect them to tell me what happened and why they are unable to keep theor word.

Yes, I keep my promises. Jesus said to let your Yes mean Yes and your No mean No, So I try not to make promises I may not be able to keep. If someone asks me if I can do something, I always say I will check and get back to them. I say no to lots of things when I am not certain I will feel like doing them when I’m very busy. It is not a good feeling when someone makes a promise and does not keep it. It makes me not really believe them the next time.

"My word is my bond" has been my way all the time. If I cannot keep a promise, I will feel more let down than the one I promised to. If they have a valid and convincing reason, I move on. Otherwise, I would feel let down - siva

That's what I always thought but some feel it is just something they say without attaching any meaning to their words. Apparently Emperor Napoleon I said: "If you want to get on in this world, make many promises but don't keep them."

Some people make promises they know they can't or won't keep. Some make promises which they manage to keep. Others make promises and fail to keep them because of unexpected happenings - I'd rather not make a promise if I am not sure I will be able to keep it.

@Kandae11 When I give my word on something, I always say that I'll do my best but make no promises as I know that life is unpredictable and I alway promise less than I know that I can do.

@Kandae11, you are certainly right, but there are promises that must be fulfilled no matter what like in a work place-a promise to substitute a class for example, and a promise to visit a sick friend or relative. These cases are hard to break. In my case, I do not promise something beyond my reach and capacity to avoid conflicts.

Yes, and some other people say: "A promise is a promise." We should only make promises that we can keep. Though there can be some difficult situations at times that make it impossible for us to keep it but then we should give a good explanation to the person that we promised. It is only right and fair. What do you think?

Hey Felix! I'm back. I don't like making promises as I don't want to give false hope to people. I don't want to disappoint them. I like giving them surprises. When I use the expression 'it's a promise,' people knew that I only say it in jest or when we're just kidding around and having some silly conversation. But when it's something serious, I don't make promises. I just tell them I'll try to and I will try my best. I don't want to disappoint people as I don't want to be disappointed as well.

Welcome back! I'm like you! I don't want to give false hope and I don't like to get it either. When I was working I had a motto that I kept to myself that I would always promise a bit less than I knew I could deliver and gained the trust of my customers that they often referred their friends to me.

That is a very true observation that keeping one's promises and trust go hand in hand. How can one trust someone that doesn't keep their word?
