Does this sort of thing happen any more?
We recently had our 53rd wedding anniversary, so I decided to look at our wedding photos. I came across the one above where I had all these men doffing their hats to me.
I wonder if this was unusual as I've never seen any other similar photos. If you are married did you have anything like this at your wedding?

Yes they used to do that sort of thing in 1865. The old traditions are sadly dying out Janet. Happy 53rd to you and hour husband,. Next big one for you is diamond!

@jabouk Congratulations! Never witnessed doffing on such occasions. What is common though is the groom's party wearing kilts whether or not they are of Scottish descent. At the less decorous weddings the men invariably lift their kilts and show their bottoms. I refuse to attend kilted weddings because there are some things I don't need to see.

I married in a Catholic Church, the men had no hat on their heads, I was greeted with throwing rice when I stepped outside the Church. I was going through my wedding photos a few days ago. I found two full albums in my mom's apartment. Belated Happy Anniversary Janet.

The men didn't wear their hats in the church - it's funny that it's ok for the women to do that, but not the men. They wore them before and after the ceremony.
Do you feel like sharing some of your wedding photos? I'd love to see them. Thanks for the anniversary wishes Anna

That is such a nice photo, and a lovely gesture. Was it outside the church?
We don't have that custom here . No hats for one thing, some communities have a head gear called turban

That's a great photo. Did not know wearing hats was still in fashion. Thought it was an ancient style.

@jaboUK - Wow! I have never seen that in the United States, even in old pictures. However, it is a charming custom!

@jaboUK - I just had lunch with @ElizabethWallace (remember her) and told her about your post. She said she could not even recall a wedding where the men wore hats, so she thought your picture must be very special.

Does that gesture imply same thing as 'bowing'?

Happy belated Anniversary. This is a very interesting photo. I would frame it and hang it on the wall for a conversation piece. I got married at the local magistrate. Nothing interesting there.

@jaboUK I did. So much easier than having to stress over all of those arrangements.

That shows respect and appreciation, I believe.
It is well deserved indeed; after all, you have crossed half a century.
In our rituals, there are some carried forward from days when marriages were conducted when both the bride and groom were still not adults. They include some games and songs to encourage the couple to know each other.
Now one waits to get settled in life and sometimes they unsettle a settled life sadly!
Lots have changed now with the rich overdoing each other in terms of extravagance - siva
