What happens when you drive away with the gas nozzle still in your car and pull the hose out of the gas pump. By The Horse.

My protocol when I gas up is to run into the gas station store and buy some Gatorade, and perhaps cigs, if I need them.
That means that I have to remember to finish pumping my gas when I get back to the car. But if I'm thinking of something else, I worry that I might drive off with the nozzle in my car.
I've always wondered what would happen if someone drive off the the nozzle in the car, and today I learned. The folks at the gas station were joking about a man who had done it earlier in the day.
I asked if his insurance pays for the damage. They explained to me that the gas pump and hose are equipped with a "quick release" mechanism. If there is no damage to the nozzle, then everyone is relieved, and nobody has to pay for anything. If the nozzle is damaged or broken, then the distracted driver (and/or his/her insurance) has to pay.
Remember that you learned it from The Horse! Have you ever almost driven away with the gas nozzle still in your car?

I don't think so but I once drove away with the container from the bank drive thru in my car.

@TheHorse Yeah, but why would you say that? It could have happened lately..but thankfully, it has not!

This is interesting. I wonder how many times it has happened to Taxi drivers or Uber, Lyft and the ones who deliver food? Actually it would be interesting to see what the stats are for this

I cannot remember if I did, or almost did. If so there were no repercussions. It would have been about forty five years ago, though. Maybe I just saw someone else do it as I cannot imagine doing it myself. I am too compulsive about things.

They might have a quick release now but several years ago they didn't. One of my friends did this and she ended up having to pay for what her insurance company wouldn't.

@TheHorse To make sure all is well. Sometimes a pump will just stop.

Not me, but my friend did that! She was exhausted out of her mind (long story). Her mind was "not there" after pumping the gas . . . she actually took off with the nossle/hose and the gas station owners demanded that she pay for the damages.

When I drove ages ago in NYC most of the gas stations still had service and I did not have to pump myself.

I pumped my gas when living in CA or traveling but always did it first or went into the store first then out to pump. Here in Oregon, they pump for us so no worries. I always wondered if gas would pour out or something if a hose was pulled out.
