More about the endurance ride

The collage shows four photos from the endurance ride that Vince and I recently attended at Talbot, Western Australia. Top left shows a competitor trotting her horse out in front of the veterinarians. The horse has already had its heart rate, temperature and respiration checked, along with gut sounds, and mucous-membrane response (pressing a finger against the gum to gauge how quickly blood returns to the spot). The legs and back are checked for sore spots then the horse is trotted away from the vet then back so that any lameness can be detected. Only then is this rider allowed to head out on the track. It will be checked after 40kms or at the end of their distance if they are doing a shorter ride. The five competitors that did the 80 km (50 mile) ride started out at 2am. Most were back at camp by about 10am, before the weather got really hot, and all vetted through successfully. Horses see well in the dark and the riders wear lamps on their helmets to they can pick up the direction markers. Eighty kilometre riders do two 40km loops. The rider top right is heading out at 6 am on his second leg. You can see the moon is still up. Lower right shows a rider on his/her own. Some horses travel better on their own; others like to have company. Lower left shows a group of riders who left at 8am and rode for 20 kms. Third from the left in that photo is a young girl on quite a small pony. They had no trouble covering the distance. Sorry this is a bit long but them’s the breaks.

Did you and Vince get checked by the vets, too? We don't want Vince to go lame after running any distance. I'm glad the ride was over before it got too hot.

Honestly, if they tested the riders like they do the horses, the horses would have to go out on their own!!

@JudyEv How far do you think you and Vince could go before they'd have to call an ambulance?

I love to read about the endurance rides that you both attend. These pictures are so varied and each has its own story. I absolutely love the lone pony with the young girl.

Children as young as 7 or 8 will sometimes ride 10 or 20 kms without any trouble. And they trot their own ponies out with much less effort than their Mums or Dads. This lass would be older but she still isn't very big really.

@JudyEv I imagine that both rider and horse are familiar with each other already before the actual endurance ride.

@allen0187 They would have spent hours and hours together so they really are a team.

The horse and rider spend hours together training for such rides so they have a very good rapport.

That time of the morning is nice to be drinking the first tea of the day, not sure about starting a second lap of 40km!

@Ronrybs I sometimes tell my son he should have learnt the flute, not the double bass. So much easier to transport. He actually hitch-hiked with it in Ireland but only the once.

In the old days, the rides weren't so well regulated but nowadays they are very particular about keeping the horses safe.

Those are really good shots as usual. The lower left shot reminds me of part of our desert in our county, but we don't have light colored sand, usually it's kind of a gray color.

The paddocks are all dry at the moment. It's not really sand, just dry pasture. In a few months, they'll be green again.

Interesting procedures to test the health of the horses. I am glad that this is a major concern. All your photos are beautiful. I like the young girl on the small pony.

Before I was married, I'd get up early every Christmas morning and go for a ride. For me, it was the best way to start a day.

I'm glad you went into such detail about the endurance race. It's interesting hearing about each picture, etc. Its logical the horses would have to be checked but not something I gave any thought to. I loved horseback riding when I was in high school but doubt I would ever had been able to do an endurance ride Great pictures Judy

It can sound very stressful for the horses when you first tell someone but once they understand the background people are happier about it.

If a horse gets into trouble on the track - it might tread on a rock and be lame - they take a float out to pick it up and bring it back to base.

There must be water stations along the way for the horses. I would imagine the riders would probably need a bit of a break too.

There are checkpoints every 10 kms with feed and water for horses and water and sweets for riders. Often there is other water in dams or puddles if it's winter.

They are very careful to take good care of the horse. Firstly, they love their animals and secondly, the animal do-gooders would be down on them like a ton of bricks if they even suspected any mismanagement or abuse.

There is a ride taking place over the Easter weekend and they will ride 80 kms each day for 3 days - a total of 240 kms.
