Introducing my new coffee mug

We have two sons, one of whom lives a two-hour flight away in Melbourne and the other a much further distance away in Ireland. Neither of our sons has much money to spare on gifts and buying presents for each other can be a bit of a nightmare. Apart from the difficulty of trying to come up with good ideas, postage costs are now horrendous and very unreliable. Buying online is a better option. The ‘boys’ (now aged 50 and 48) often ask for suggestions. At our age, there is little that we need but I try to come up with something that isn’t too expensive but will satisfy their expectations. I have a birthday in a few days and I suggested a coffee mug as I have several chipped ones which need to be replaced. This arrived yesterday. Isn’t it beautiful? The bird is a rainbow lorikeet, one of our more colourful parrots.

I really love your new mug. If there are more in the set he could buy you another bird for Christmas!

@JudyEv I threw out everything with chips when I was decluttering a few months ago. Made lots of space in my cupboards.

@valmnz I had a major declutter when Vince was away for six weeks. It was as if I were a different person. Then we had another major clean-out when we sold our place.

I will suggest that as I have two or three more that now have chips in them.

It's a very nice looking mug. I believe he got you a good one. Happy almost birthday! You'll be 22 this year, right? (I'm positive you mistyped your sons' ages. I don't know why you do that. )

@JudyEv "sometimes", huh? I was thinking 8 and 10, but that would still make 22 too young for their ages. *sigh* You don't allow me to tell little fibs for a good reason.

That's what I was trying to come up with. Something he'd be happy buying but which wouldn't cost too much.

What a beautiful mug. It's gotten to a point where most of the people I know who have kids simply send gift cards. Of course sometimes those gift cards go missing and they find out many months after the fact. I prefer to send gifts via either Walmart.com or Amazon.com but I only have one friend I send anything to.

I'm not sure if Australia can use Amazon like I do but I have sent birthday gifts that were not giftcards to a friend of mine who lives hundreds of miles away.

That is lovely. I do the same for our kids by trying to think of something not too expensive. Hubbies daughter always buys me a Wiccan calendar for Christmas. That way I have all the moon signs easy to see.

We used to give my Mum a calendar most Christmases. Several years we had one made up with photos of things dear to her - mostly flowers and plants.

@judyev isn’t gift-buying always just such a nightmare? I’m useless at it. A mug as useful and pleasing to look at as this one is an excellent gift. Happy birthday.

I like to get something practical if I can - and really that goes for receiving too. We have enough knick-knacks for one lifetime.

I'm not sure what noise they make other than squawking and I couldn't find out. Actually, in our state they were first an introduced species and are now somewhat of a pest. They compete with smaller species for food and nesting hollows.

When I buy a mug I choose on capacity. How much it holds is most important! What bird is that? I couldn't quite read the caption under it

I don't like tiny mugs but a 'standard' size is okay by me. The bird is a rainbow lorikeet. They are actually a migrant to our state and regarded as a pest, competing with our indigenous parrots and small birds for habitat and food. But no-one can deny their attractiveness.
