Christmas in Australia

A myLot member who lives in England has been wondering what it’s like to have the seasons reversed, as it were, and to celebrate Christmas in hot weather.
In Australia, we have our winter in the middle of the year and Christmastime is always hot and dry. If you’ve grown up with these conditions, then that’s the way it’s always been and you don’t really think about it.
Years ago, many people stuck to the old traditions of a hot roast lunch at Christmas but nowadays the menu is more likely to include seafood and salads, with watermelon, ice-cream and other cold desserts to follow.
Some people like to have a special ‘Christmas in July’ party where they indulge in a more traditional hot meal.
The photo shows Vince, myself and our two boys. In 1985, we sent out Christmas cards with this photo. We had to take the photo well before Christmas which explains why we were rugged up.

It would be nice to experience one Christmas in Australia to see it in the Summer.

I remember this photo, I am sure I "trimmed" Vince hair.
Humans are creatures of habits. We have been in the Caribbean one year for Christmas. Never again! I missed the cold, the snow, the hot food on the table and the dark at 4 in the afternoon.

Everything is upside down under isn't it. You view the moon upside down, the Orion constellation upside down, the seasons are reversed...etc. As someone who experiences a lot of snow in the winter where I live (Canada) I always wondered how Sydney Australia was able to pull off hosting the 2000 Summer Olympics in the middle of the Southern winter. ![](/Content/images/emotes/confused.gif)

@Starmaiden We do get some wonderful spectacles of the Milky Way for sure. I think that's part of the Galactic Core. Is that right?

@JudyEv
I must admit. You have the most beautiful, front seated view of the Galactic Core in your night sky. That's something I never get to see. Not even on the distant horizon.

I remember you shared this photo once before.
It is a great photo, but I did not remember the story behind it that you had it taken quite a bit before the actual holiday.
Christmas in Canada is usually white, although we have had our fair share of bare, or green holidays also. I remember one year where it was mild and rained and we had a muddy Christmas.

After my brother got married, he and his wife moved to California where it's always sunny and warm. He adapted pretty well from having cold and snowy Christmases and yearly his Christmas cards would be his decorated tree on the patio and he would be barbecuing. We always got a kick out of that but I don't think it would feel like Christmas to me if it wasn't cold (and snowy).
Love your Christmas picture

@JudyEv Vince looks cute even without a haircut. I have plenty of family photos where one of us needs a haircut or a new wardrobe from back in the "good old days" ![](/Content/images/emotes/lol.gif)

I know the trend has become to have Christmas in July celebrations on TV and various major companies. I got my computer on a Black Friday deal. Normally, I think about Black Friday as the day after Thanksgiving in November. Doing this gives me, at least, a taste of what Christmas is like down under. It's hot here and everything cold is on the menu.
Great picture of you and the boys.

It used to take tons of planning to send out those Christmas photos. Now you get someone to snap it and you can print it yourself at home in a jiffy. I spent a Christmas or two in southern California, and it was definitely not like Christmas in Oklahoma or Kansas. I think I would love a nice picnic with seafood and salads as a good change of pace for Christmas dinner.

That's a nice picture. Christmas here is always when it is cool and we have typical Christmas sweets that we do not make at any other time in the year

It's a good photo.
There have been years when the temp was much too warm on Christmas day instead of lots of snow. I remember wearing shorts and playing outside barefoot with our Christmas toys. ![](/Content/images/emotes/lol.gif)

What a very handsome family. Great memories for you, Now that I have been in Florida for six years you know what I would like? Having someplace to spend Christmas in the snow and then returning to Florida, I miss having Christmas snow but I understand that if you wind up living in a place where Christmas comes during the summer you have to adjust. We get Christmas in the winter season anyway but we get now SNOW,
