Christmas in Australia

A myLot member who lives in England has been wondering what it’s like to have the seasons reversed, as it were, and to celebrate Christmas in hot weather. In Australia, we have our winter in the middle of the year and Christmastime is always hot and dry. If you’ve grown up with these conditions, then that’s the way it’s always been and you don’t really think about it. Years ago, many people stuck to the old traditions of a hot roast lunch at Christmas but nowadays the menu is more likely to include seafood and salads, with watermelon, ice-cream and other cold desserts to follow. Some people like to have a special ‘Christmas in July’ party where they indulge in a more traditional hot meal. The photo shows Vince, myself and our two boys. In 1985, we sent out Christmas cards with this photo. We had to take the photo well before Christmas which explains why we were rugged up.

I love the picture! It would be weird for me to celebrate Christmas in hot weather, but like you said, if you grew up like that, then it is absolutely normal.

@JudyEv I love a white Christmas, but that’s probably because when it snows here, it is measured in inches, and not feet. If I had the snow New England gets then I wouldn’t want a white Christmas either!

I've always thought a white Christmas would be nice but, since being on here and hearing all the stories about snow, I've gone off the idea a bit.

I remember this photo, I am sure I "trimmed" Vince hair. Humans are creatures of habits. We have been in the Caribbean one year for Christmas. Never again! I missed the cold, the snow, the hot food on the table and the dark at 4 in the afternoon.

Everything is upside down under isn't it. You view the moon upside down, the Orion constellation upside down, the seasons are reversed...etc. As someone who experiences a lot of snow in the winter where I live (Canada) I always wondered how Sydney Australia was able to pull off hosting the 2000 Summer Olympics in the middle of the Southern winter.

Forgive me for saying but you actually have it all wrong. Australia is actually way up the top as you can see in this (correct) picture of the world.

@Starmaiden We do get some wonderful spectacles of the Milky Way for sure. I think that's part of the Galactic Core. Is that right?

@JudyEv I must admit. You have the most beautiful, front seated view of the Galactic Core in your night sky. That's something I never get to see. Not even on the distant horizon.

It never ceases to amaze me how people will try to point out that what they deem normal should be normal for everyone. I like that photo of the 4 of you. I'll bet the boys had a blast with that extra Christmas.

That gets me a bit too - thinking 'their' normal should be everyone's normal. Christmas isn't the same really if there are no kids around.

I remember you shared this photo once before. It is a great photo, but I did not remember the story behind it that you had it taken quite a bit before the actual holiday. Christmas in Canada is usually white, although we have had our fair share of bare, or green holidays also. I remember one year where it was mild and rained and we had a muddy Christmas.

After my brother got married, he and his wife moved to California where it's always sunny and warm. He adapted pretty well from having cold and snowy Christmases and yearly his Christmas cards would be his decorated tree on the patio and he would be barbecuing. We always got a kick out of that but I don't think it would feel like Christmas to me if it wasn't cold (and snowy). Love your Christmas picture

I know the trend has become to have Christmas in July celebrations on TV and various major companies. I got my computer on a Black Friday deal. Normally, I think about Black Friday as the day after Thanksgiving in November. Doing this gives me, at least, a taste of what Christmas is like down under. It's hot here and everything cold is on the menu. Great picture of you and the boys.

Here in the Caribbean the weather is hottest during the summer, but cooler during December to February. Those islands closest to North America can get some cold spells in December and January.

It used to take tons of planning to send out those Christmas photos. Now you get someone to snap it and you can print it yourself at home in a jiffy. I spent a Christmas or two in southern California, and it was definitely not like Christmas in Oklahoma or Kansas. I think I would love a nice picnic with seafood and salads as a good change of pace for Christmas dinner.

What a very handsome family. Great memories for you, Now that I have been in Florida for six years you know what I would like? Having someplace to spend Christmas in the snow and then returning to Florida, I miss having Christmas snow but I understand that if you wind up living in a place where Christmas comes during the summer you have to adjust. We get Christmas in the winter season anyway but we get now SNOW,
