Walking 30 Minutes a Day

I am trying to walk an aerobic walk 30 minutes a day now that the weather is getting cooler. An aerobic walk means a fast walk without stopping. It's not as easy as you might think, especially when I am walking my dog. When my dog stops to smell things, I walk forward and back, or around her in a circle so I don't have to stop walking even when she does. This must look silly to anyone driving by. But my pedometer keeps track of my total steps as well as my aerobic steps so I can't stop.
They say for heart health people should do a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day, or at least 150 minutes total per week...so I guess you can take 2 days off?
How many minutes of aerobic exercise do you get each day?

It is "good" for me, but I don't always enjoy it. Today I had a busy day of errands so we didn't get our usual walk in, so I guess I will be dancing tonight again. Ugh.

Good for you. I do 30 mins to a hour at least 5 days a week. I started this time around 9 months ago. I’m going to do my best to keep it up.

@Kouponkaren Yes, I do it to control my blood sugar. I want to stay medication free and lose weight. Congratulations on your weight loss.

@Kouponkaren Even if they doctor would not say it, I can still manage as being a physiotherapist.

Good for you. I have never really thought of it as being "prescribed by my doctor" but actually she did tell me I need to do it so I guess it was!

@Kouponkaren My husband comes with me. The doctor told him that he has to walk every day. I also walk to be sure that he walks.

@LadyDuck That's good. An hour walk is sufficient enough to sweat off toxins.

Wow, good for you. Do you have a walking partner or do you just walk by yourself?

@Kouponkaren I try to do 10,000 brisk steps a day. Sometimes I only get 5000 done. Walking with my wife doesn't count - that's not brisk.

Aw, that's wonderful. But I am sure your wife enjoys taking walks with you anyway. And every step you take above and beyond the 10,000 brisk steps is still of benefit to you.

Ha ha, yes, you are right. But there is a school of thought that says even walking more steps in your day, even if they aren't aerobic steps, is very good for you. So let them laugh all they want!

@Kouponkaren Oh I'm totally with you on that, they should all get out of their cars and walk. Life expectancy in the US is going down again nowadays after years of increases.

@Fleura That is true. They can also contribute to a healthy environment by reducing gas immission.

Probably very little aerobic activity. I do walk a lot and I am up and down small steps a lot, but none of it is sustained for any length of time.

There is a school of thought about that as well...that exercise doesn't have to be aerobic, as long as you are moving a lot. I am not sire which I agree with so I am trying to follow both ways of thinking!

I walk my dog, and sometimes that means we are going at a fast trot, and sometimes she’s stopping to see who peed where. But, it’s never enough to call aerobic exercise. It’s great that you are getting that much speed walking in your schedule.

Well, I do try, but am not as successful at it as I would like to be. Each day is a new beginning though.

Wow, good for you. I don't do that, but it would be a nice goal to set for myself. Do you walk alone or with someone else?

My doctor said just to walk 30 minutes a day. It doesn't have to be the fast walking

Well, each day is a new day to tackle things like exercise. Although I am sure you have times these days where exercise is about the last thing you want to do.

I can't really monitor how. many minutes I walk but I can accumulate maybe more than 1 hour slow and brisk walk combined. I go up and down the stairs several times a day at work and at home.

Good for you that sounds kind of fun but I have a bum knee that goes out on occasion so I need to have a shopping cart or walker to hold onto, I don't do any exercise but I think the Lord watches over me any way,

I am sorry about your knee. That stinks if it means you can't get much exercise. I am glad the Lord watches over you. He watches over me too!

I used to do 15-30 minutes of indoor walking workouts until I we moved to a place where I'm required to walk my kids to school each day and fetch them in the afternoon. Since I've been walking more now, I just do 10-minute HIIT workouts at home.

@Kouponkaren Yes, I'm grateful. Although I could still lose a few pounds and reduce some belly fat. I haven't really thought about quitting carbs.

Lowering my carb intake has really helped me. Rather hard to do though, especially for people like me who love bread and pasta.

Well, a bicycle will help you get aerobic exercise in as well. I currently don't have a bike and my community is full of hills and winding roads so it wouldn't be too safe for a bike anyway.
