Do you use olive oil?

This week was very busy, after weeks of rain, we finally had a few days of sun that were used to harvest the olives. my father has a small olive grove and every year we produce our own olive oil, this year the olive oil is so expensive that we hope to make enough until the next harvest. My mother fell last weekend, had a muscle contracture (not sure if this is the correct name in English) but yesterday she felt better and with her help yesterday we managed to finish the olive harvest. Between my work, harvest the olives, help my mom as she was limited due to the pain and do my house chores, I didn't have much time left for Mylot, I think I even missed some notifications. Picture of the olives.

Harvesting olives is time-consuming and quite hard work I think. They haven't invented anything to mechanise the picking as far as I know.

@nela13 The only knowledge I have of it here is that they lay down sheets or tarpaulins under the trees then shake the branches vigorously.

It is very hard. There are some things that help to put the olives down but my parents don't have it yet.

I like olive oil but I don´t use it for all the food that needs oil. I prefer sunflower oil for deep frying.

I don't often use olive oil as it is not a very common oil for us to cook. We normally use corn/soy bean or peanut oil to cook. But when I make a pizza, I will use the olive oil.

Real life sure takes over. I'm glad your mother is feeling much better from her injury - it's nice you were able to help her. Wow, I can't imagine making my own olive oil - I have no idea how that's even done!

Yes, Pretty and I use olive oil. It's better for our health than vegetable oil. We bought several bottles of extra virgin olive oil when we caught it on sale several years ago and have only used about half of the first bottle. Since you were doing something so important, I'm positive we'll all forgive you for missing notifications. I hope your mom is feeling much better now.

@nela13 You're very welcome. And, I certainly do understand. We don't deep fry anything and use only a teaspoon or so of olive oil when we fry foods. I have dipped homemade bread in olive oil before eating it. I enjoy that.

That sounds like a lot of work, but I’m sure it’s worth it to be able to produce your own olive oil. I hope that you have a bountiful harvest and that you make enough oil to last an entire year! I like ve olive oil, and use it for just about all my baking and cooking needs.

@nela13 That’s why you live such long, healthy lives! I also use olive oil for everything in my kitchen, I truly understand the health benefits. I avoid the other oils that are popular here (vegetable, corn, peanut oil) because they aren’t as healthy.

That is great you can produce your own olive oil and I really wish I could do that. I do use olive oil, but as a cost saving measure I have used it less since inflation took hold. It's not that we can't afford it. I just like to save wherever I can, and so I mostly use vegetable oil. But I always keep olive oil in the house.

The olive harvest sounds like a wonderful tradition, and making your own olive oil must be incredibly rewarding. I'm sorry to hear about your mother's fall, but I'm glad she's feeling better. Muscle contracture sounds like a tough challenge, but it's heartwarming to know that you all pitched in to finish the olive harvest together. Teamwork indeed! I'm curious if you have any favorite recipes or dishes that feature your freshly pressed olive oil!
