Someone in Your House

My dad and his wife are in Florida this week and next, but next Tuesday an older couple from our church and their granddaughter (early twenties) who lives with them are staying at their house while their own house is painted. It turns out since the couple knew my dad and his wife would be gone, they asked if it would be okay if they stayed there. My dad and Diana happily agreed. I thought that was pretty daring, but then I’m a different generation. Or maybe it’s because my mom would give me a look if I ever asked that favor myself. My dad is a little bummed about one thing. Their granddaughter likes her house cold. My dad plays a game to see how low he can get his electric bill. I told him to count on a spike this month. I don’t think it was rude, but I would just be so uncomfortable if anyone else lived in my place while I was gone. Even if I trusted them; only my sister would I be okay with. What do you think? *Please note I have no problem with this myself; it’s not my business what they do.

I would be super anxious about the whole thing. I'd never allow it.

I guess my point of view is it is a good security measure for your dad and Diana and that both sides are winners in this case. It keeps the bad guys from being able to assume no one would be there.

I’m just surprised the couple actually asked, not so much that my dad agreed.

We wouldn't do it. There have been a few recent situations where we have had to discuss this type of situation - and we agree that there'd just be no way. My mom would be the only trusted person to stay here, but even she would not want to intrude.

I can’t believe they asked. I guess they feel really comfortable with my dad and stepmom.

@AmbiePam That's the thing - why would they ask - but then again, like you said, it may be a generational thing.

I would be alright with someone staying here if we knew them very well and there were ground rules regarding the a/c and how it was used.

They’re really good people (although I don’t know their granddaughter); I just found it daring to ask.

@Juliaacv It would be nice to be so comfortable with people you know it’s not considered forward to ask that kind of thing. I still wouldn’t do it because my mom ingrained manners in me, but still yet, that would be nice.

@AmbiePam It was daring of them to ask if the gd could tag along, but maybe they feel that comfortable around your Dad and his wife, or maybe they are just really nervy.

It's a little bit cheeky really. Perhaps they knew your father and his wife are very kind and accommodating. It's okay if you're home but different if you're not.

I agree with you. I would be okay with my brother and only him. I don't want anyone to stay there.

I probably would not do it, especially if I was out of town and/or state. It would just make me nervous!

On the plus side, they came home to a neatly trimmed yard. That was sweet of them. But I would have felt weird once they asked me.

I don't think I'd be happy having someone ask if they could stay at my house while I was away. I know I would certainly never ask that question myself and would rather find other arrangements. I think it would be totally different if your dad was looking for someone to house sit while they are away.

Yes, I just thought asking was really unusual.

Yes, with friends or family; we let friends stay in our house while we're away and also my partner's parents (obviously we would let my parents stay too, if they were alive!) I think I prefer having someone around than leaving the place empty, for security reasons. When I lived in MN, two of my work colleagues used to ask me to stay at their homes while they were away. I would look after their various animals.

I house sat for a couple to watch over their cat and dog while they were gone. I loved their animals. I ended up in the ER, but the animals were fine. And that was all I could ask for!

I think it's okay since your dad knows them. He trusts them enough to agree to let them stay while they're gone.

When I owned a home, I would never want anyone to stay there, while I was gone. Even family members don't respect someone else's home, when they receive the full reign.

Before allowing them, maybe you should discuss with them about this stuffs. They should also share with the electric bills and other stuffs. It should be clear first and foremost. Both parties should agree.
