Inhaling Coffee

The weirdest thing happened to me this morning: I inhaled coffee. I don't mean "inhale" in the sense that I needed a cup of coffee so badly that I inhaled it to help wake me up. I literally inhaled it. I was going to take a sip of my coffee, and right when the java hit my mouth I had a sudden yawn, and darn it if that coffee in my mouth didn't go straight down my windpipe! Of course I went into a fit of coughing, but the crazy thing is that even long afterward (I'm talking at least half the day) I could still "feel" coffee in my lungs as I breathed. And it seemed like I was more awake and alert than normal! Now I'm all for finding ways to get that heavenly caffeine goodness into the bloodstream as fast as possible, but this isn't exactly what I had in mind! When was the last time you "swallowed something down the wrong pipe?" And, could you "feel" it long after you coughed it all out? I admit that I don't ever want that to happen again, but for some reason it felt like it really gave me a boost. Maybe it was the coughing fit and not the caffeine directly in my lungs. Who knows? It worked though.

I did this but with ginger ale, one time after a long illness (I was in the hospital) I asked for that and as they were encouraging me to drink more liquids, I got it. I had never in my life been as thirsty as I was that very minute! I took a big slug and it welt down wrong. I couldn’t hardly even breathe! The nurse came flying in and then an emergency team etc. It was not a fun time, and I had to stay there longer to be sure I wouldn’t do it again. Live and learn and when extremely thirsty, don’t drink too fast!! I am glad you are ok, Jeff.

I think that was part of my problem, that I got in a hurry. If I would just slow down a little bit and concentrate on what I’m doing, things like this probably wouldn’t happen.

@MarieCoyle Not only do I hurry too much, but I am also multi-tasking a lot at the same time, which means my full, undivided attention is not on any one task, which can lead to carelessness sometimes.

@moffittjc I hurry way too much at times, too. Sometimes, we just do ourselves no favors!

Gosh, that REALLY sucks when that happens. Either way, when you are nearly drowning, it does have quite the effect on perking up the old senses.

@psanasangma It's funny, but here we are more than a day later, and I keep imagining that I can still taste coffee in the bottom of my throat, like it's stuck there!

Thankfully, nothing burned. My chest and throat felt a little weird after that, but all was fine in the end.

I'm sorry it went straight down your windpipe. I'm glad it gave you a needed boost for the rest of your day. The only thing that goes down wrong is water because it's mostly what I drink.

There's been plenty of times in my life where water has gone down the wrong pipe. And for the most part, I can't remember any other liquids besides water doing that. Which is probably a good thing. Can you imagine milk or Coke or something getting down into your lungs? That would be interesting to say the least.

That sounds awful!! I had an ulcerate throat once when I was about 16 and somehow when I tried to swallow, the liquid would come out my nose. That was pretty gross too.

That would be gross to see. When I was a child there was this boy at school that would drink milk and then make it come up out of his nose. I remember how grossed out I was about it every time he did it.

@moffittjc I've read that some can make it come out their eyes but I'm not sure I believe that.

@JudyEv I'm sure there are people out there that can do that, but I wonder why they would even want to do something like that?

I have a very sensitive spot in my throat that bothers me quite often. I'm constantly irritating it and going into coughing fits. I'm glad you didn't choke. Have a good day.

I had an incident with one of my medications the other day. It got stuck in my mouth. It was taken with water but didn't go down. I took another sip. Still stuck. Another sip of water. Still stuck. At this point I finished off the water in gulps trying to get the pill down. It ended up dissolving completely in my mouth and OH, what a HORRIBLE taste!! Liquids going done wrong hurt!! I haven't done that lately thank goodness!

OMG I've had that happen before with meds I've taken. They've gotten stuck in the back of my throat and ended up dissolving there. What a horrible tastes, and it seems like you can't get rid of that weird taste no matter how hard you try.

Coffee works in mysterious ways I guess I don't know when probably within the last few months though. Choking is a fear of mine so I try hard not to. And if it does..I will immediately calm myself cuz I know my anxiety around it could potentially lead to serious consequences. Yup, you got yourself a good dose of coffee.

I think that a lot of the times I swallow things down the wrong pipe is because I get in a hurry and don’t take the time to slow down when I’m eating and drinking.

Chug chug chug ! Ohhhh, I don't like it when something goes down the wrong pipe . . . I swear sometimes it happens with my own spit ! If anything, you know your coughing reflex is working well (that's actually important!).

@much2say I was the tiniest bit concerned that there would be lingering effects. I really got a pretty good dose of coffee way down into my lungs (well, at least it felt that way). But I'm still alive and kicking and breathing, so it must not have done any long-term harm.

If I had been chug, chug, chugging, I probably wouldn't have had any issues. But when you suddenly take a deep breath of air just as your coffee mug is hitting your lips, well that is a recipe for disaster! But thankfully I was alright after the immediate coughing fit.

It’s a common occurrence with me, but it’s usually when I drink water. This was the first time it happened to me with coffee. And it felt weird in my chest because the coffee was hot, so I felt a very warm sensation in my throat and chest.

Oh, that would surely burn in the lungs. I hope that after sleeping and being horizontal your body has rejected that coffee where it should not be and you feel better again. But still, remember, this is NO reason to quit enjoying your life serum, it IS a good and necessary part of our lives.

I did have a sort of burning or warm sensation in my chest area for several hours after that happened. It's possible my mind was just playing tricks on me and I just thought it felt that way because the coffee was hot, but I really felt like hot coffee was trapped down in my lungs!

I've had Coke come up my nose too, and that is just as crazy of an experience, with all the fizz and all. I guess the moral of the story in all of this is that we have to be more careful when we are consuming liquids.
