Cutting off your nose to spite your face

The photo has nothing to do with the text but I love the ‘weeping willow’ which is made of chains. I put up a similar photo a year or two ago. My sister-in-law gave me a couple of shirts which are too small for her. By the sizing, they should be her size but they’re too small. I was reminded of a friend who tried on a pair of shorts. They looked really nice on her and she was about to buy them when she saw the size. I think it might have been one size bigger than she normally wore but whatever, she refused to buy anything that size. I couldn’t understand her problem. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Is that a saying you’ve heard?

Over here, women’s sizes are vague anyway. They use numbers like 10, 12, 14, etc…… Oddly no odd numbers. A mystery to all us men, who use actual measurements like 38”, 40”, 42”. However, we do see a lot of sizes quoted now as S, M, L. This can cause confusion as what exactly is S (small)? As most of our garments are made in the Far East, a small (S) can actually be a large (L) from another manufacturer, and vice versa. As women are more vain about these things, I can imagine “cutting one’s nose off to spite their face” is quite common.

@orson_kart I’m my experience ladies buy small intending to slim into the garment which eventually ends up in a charity shop, but buying small makes some folk feel slimmer that they they will ever be or have ever been.

I think the men's measurements you mention are all waist measurements which wouldn't really work for women. I'm going to write about 'large' and 'small' and also 'luxury' and 'premier'. Maybe I should go and do it now.

@xFiacre I understand that some might do this but I'm not one of them. If it doesn't fit I don't buy it - except I buy most of my clothes from op shops so I can afford to make the odd mistake.

Definitely heard that saying, and your friend should have bought the shorts and cut off the size tag.

My thoughts precisely. As it was, I bought the shorts and wore them for years.

Too funny really. What would she have done if she'd tried on the correct size shorts instead?

Well, I'm betting she'd accuse the clerks of mislabeling them I've had acquaintances that would do that.

@rebelann I guess that would be a distinct possibility.

They wouldn't have fitted so that wouldn't have worked. I still shake my head thinking about it. lol

Not familiar with the saying. But I like a size bigger than my actual size. I don't see any problem with that

@JudyEv - You are right, but not that are too big. Now I am in trouble, because I buy the smallest size and smaller does not exist.

It depends on the garment but sometimes you need clothing that has a bit of ease.

@judyev Not only heard the saying but have seen plenty of evidence of it! Your friend who wouldn’t buy anything “that” size even though it fitted is a bit like the woman I know who insisted getting a bus to another town to collect her pension each week because she didn’t want to be seen collecting her pension by anyone who knew her.

Really?? That is so funny. People used to be really cagey about their age. It doesn't seem quite so bad these days.

yes. I used to be like that too. But I don't care about sizing. After covid, I noticed that my size has gone up.

I have heard the saying. I have also seen illustrations of what a particular size looks like in different countries. I bought a really cute lace top at a thrift shop that was supposed to be my size. It isn't. It will go to my grand daughters.

If it fits, I wear it! I'm a little skinny, so if what I get is labelled large, I love it!!

I'm the same. I don't care what the label says. If it fits nicely, I'm happy to have it.

I know that cycling kit is notorious for its sizing being on the small size. Lots of retailers seem to have a very flexible idea of sizes. If it fits, I am happy

The thing is it fitted her really nicely. Surely the label is just that - a label. But of course I'd rather my clothes showed a smaller size too.

Sizing can change and it often differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. I would buy something if I liked it and the size wasn't what I normally wore, nobody sees the size tag but me. I like the photo, both the chain tree as well as the orbs.

Manufacturers' sizing can differ a lot. I know Asian people think (or thought) Westerners are quite large.

Those creations look beautiful, I particularly like the weeping willow. You made me laugh about the site, but I noticed that now I buy things supposed to be "my size" and they are too large. I imagine is to please those who love to see themselves "slimmer".

Never heard that staying. Your friend felt that it wasn't her size, it fits her body but not her soul.
