We picked an aubergine today

The photo shows an eggplant that we picked this morning from the house-sit vegetable garden. We’ve had a lot of roma tomatoes off the bushes but this is the first eggplant, which are also known as augergines. They are a member of the nightshade family and grown worldwide.
By botanical standards, it’s a berry and most often purple in colour. The fruit absorbs oils and flavours so have a variety of uses in various cuisines. The cut surface of the fruit turns brown quickly.
Eggplants were never around when we were kids and it’s still not something we use often.

Eggplant is not a favorite; and my husband never would have tried it. I hope you are enjoying your house-sit.

@LeaPea2417 One of my favorites, actually. I have not made it in a while. Maybe it's time to put it on the list of things to make.

I see many eggplant at the market but I never shop for them. It is a vegetable we never use in my home since growing up.
I'm not familiar with it or aware of any benefits or how it tastes. But everytime I see it I'm always curious.
I think I will search it on YouTube the benefits and how to prepare so I can see if I will ever like eating it.

An unusual but natural looking shape! Today all we see in supermarkets is the ‘perfect’ stuff and it is boring

A lot of perfectly good fruit and vegetables are thrown out because they are too big/small/funny shape etc. It's very wasteful.

Here we also know of Eggplants with name "Brinjal".
Its Hindi name is "Baingan" and does not differ too much from "Aubergine".
I like it in boiled form with added Peas although it is also consumed in Fritters and other forms.
As per Ayurveda, it is best be avoided in the Rainy Season / Monsoons because it is supposedly hard to digest (even though it doesn't seems to be the case when eating!).

Some states in India have very unique recipes that involve this vegetable.

I'm sending it home with my friend. You can bake it or use it in vegetarian dishes. I'm not sure about eating it raw. I think the seeds are bitter.

You better stay there permanently as I find that place is a paradise on earth. The owners have placed implicit trust in both of you and that is a nice feeling.
I have grown these in our garden and we call them brinjals . I love this vegetable and eat it often

I've never seen eggplants in this shape.
I love eating eggplants. Have them almost at least once a week.

Aubergines are not a ‘go to’ veg for me. I tend to use them as an alternative to courgettes if they are on special offer, or I just fancy a change.
All I’ve ever done with them, is fry them on a griddle or roast them in the oven with a decent drizzle of olive oil. You could wear them as a hat if you’re that way inclined.

We rarely have them either. We're just not very familiar with them.

Love eggplant Parmesan, I make it a lot in the summer, also I'll slice in circles, roll in flour, salt and pepper and fry.
Like you I didn't have these as a child.
