Has anyone tried it? It is created by Seth Roberts and is a particularily interesting a strange philosophy and i think its crazy enough i might just try it..he believes that our bodies have a 'set point' of what weight they want to be, and that by using taste/calorie association you can lower that set point, to do this you consume a spoon full of extra light olive oil or diluted sugar water an hour after and before any food..has this worked for anyone? what do you think about it?

Very interesting. So, let me get this straight, you drink either the olive oil or the sugar water, not both? I don't know if I could swallow the olive oil. I have a very sensitive "gag" reflex, lol. I can't handle anything overly oily or slimy. As for the bland meals, what are some examples of servings and foods you are allowed to eat? I am looking for a diet to jump start my diet. After that I will use the food pyramid. It has worked best for me in the past. Weight Watchers has also worked very well for me, but I can't afford to go or make time to go the meetings. Please fill me guys and gals.

What works best for me is keeping a food and exercise diary so I can see that my intake is balance by my calorie use. weightlossresources (dot co dot uk)is a great site for this, makes it really easy to understand and their free three day trial gets you started even if you don't use them after that. I lost 2 stone easily with them

the theory behind it is, that you can eat anything you usually would, but by adding either the sugar water, or the olive oil you are breaking the 'calorie-taste' association of you body, lowering your weight set point and your body will require less food, therefore you will desire to eat less, and you will lose weight..the thing to remember is to have the sugar water or oil and hour after any food, and an hour before you eat anything, or drink anything with taste..basically set aside two hours

That sounds pretty interesting,so do you drink the same amount of sugar water,as you would the olive oil?
It would be interesting to see if it really works,I cannot do the sugar water because I am a diabetic, and I am not sure about the olive oil,But I would love to know if this reall y works.

with the oil, you consume one tablespoon one hour after and before eating anything, that is it really, just make sure there is 2 hours where you dont eat anything except the oil, and the oil recommended is extra light olive oil because it is important it has relatively no taste..

i do not believe tht.first of all a person does not look the way he/she looks just because thier body is tuned to a certian weight.i have seen people who have lost many kilos and all that.so that theorey may not hold water.also have you seen the people of ethiopia during the famine season?how malnourished they appeared?odes this diest of yuors mean that thy appear malnourished because thier body wants them to be that way?i dont think so.whats more with a good diet in place anyone can lose that flabbiness, they just have to work at that.pls chk out the links i have given below.

the malnurished children are completely out of context, they are clearly actually starving which explains why their bodies look this way, as does someone with an eating disorder, all his theory is saying is that the body is constantly preparing itself for starvation, so it is storing calories so that it can maintain this 'set point' the less you eat the more it thinks it is starving the more calories it stores, the children who are malnurished are barely eating any food, but their bodies are still alive because of this starvation and calorie storing mechanism

I never tired with the olive oil or diluted sugar water...
However Just drinking a 12 oz glass of water before every meal, helps... dramatically for many. As Man mistake thirst with hunger and are dehydrated not realising it...
Olive oil could help for people who cut most of the oils and fats out of the diet, the body needs some oils and facts to help the digestive system work smoothly so this may help out with this, and sugar water may have with people that need to increase their blood sugar levels to help raise metobolism or sugar alone slightly....
It all depends on the person... I recommend trying water plain.. I do not know how much I put into the water and oil thing, other than olive oil alone does have healthy benefits... - DNatureofDTrain

thankyou! plain water probably will help to satisfy the appetite but for the shangri-la diet the creator associates the calories in the sugar water but the lack of taste as something that tricks the body and ultimately lowers the weight the body wants to maintain..either the oil or the sugar water arent all that pleasant to consume i have found

About twenty years ago I tried a diet that called for consuming a teaspoon full of glycerin before meals, or if you were feeling shaky. It has a sweet, but burning taste. I did lose weight while following that plan. I think I read about the shangi-la diet recently. Isn't the point to find something pretty bland to consume?

yeah i think that is the basic principle behind it, to trick the body into not relating taste to calories, by consuming calories without any taste..i was wondering whether the sugar water is ok because even though diluted i still taste the sugar but apparently the 'sweetness' is ok because its not actually a flavor..

This is the first time I'm hearing about this "Shangri-La Diet".. Sounds interesting but I'm just wondering if it's true.. Care to explain a little more about this diet?

What do I think about it? I think it's nonsense. Having said that I've tried some whacky diets in my time with varying degrees of success but the bottom line is the only way to lose weight and keep it off is a sensible, balanced diet and plenty of exercise. Boring but true.
However I agree with Seth Roberts that our bodies have a "set point" of what weight they want to be. Mine is 8st 9lbs. I can get below that but can't maintain my weight any less than that - I just keep bouncing back up to it. Unfortunately at the moment I weigh a fair bit more than that though!!

I have never heard of this. It's intriguing.
The choice between olive oil and sugar water, though, doesn't really seem like a choice for me. Unless you had a medical reason to not be able to do the sugar water, why would anyone choose to drink olive oil? Or anyway, I wouldn't select it, except that something in my mind says that it's probably the better choice diet-wise, but ick. I love to cook with it. I cannot imagine drinking it.
But then again, if it were proven to work, I'd probably drink a spoonful of motor oil!
Please, if anyone tries this, or has tried it, please let me know about your results. I'm so very eager to lose weight. This sounds a bit hokey but I'm willing to try things within reason.

I think that the best skill to lose weight is together to a nutritionist, therefore it yes is enabled to give all the intruções to you of whom you can or not eat, or to leave to eat. It looks one, therefore thus atoa will not make sacrifices.
