Does anyone agree that artistry doesn't really bring good money on the table? I'm just wondering why there's lot of very artisic people who remains poor even though they have skills. Very few have been truly rewarded for their talent. I guess, because as an artist we tend to be more silent and prefers to be left alone and do our thing. But looking at the money/business industry, people who talk more gains more. Well, what do you think guys, do you really make good money out of your works?

Some artists who do good work do get paid well. Bad artists can make lots of money sometimes, if their work appeals to many people--though such popular art is often not considered high quality.
Another issue is that many artists are private, inward-looking people who are not naturally good at, or inclined to, go out and promote or market their works. And some artists (and people in all kinds of fields) may not have good business skills (such as identifying a market for their works, balancing their books, charging enough for their works, etc.)

You're right I agree with you. The digital arts dampens the true artistic skill of real artists. But I guess, it will be another form of modern art, don't you think?

sheesh i was hoping for an answer here! I am also an artist and i'll tell you it is not something to make a living on easy. i have friend who i went to high school with we were art majors and she is selling her work. you need to put it out there where ever you can. look for online art shows and use auction sites start at the bottom with low prices to build a name if you have a unique style your bound to get some kind of a fan base.
i think computers have put a huge damper on handy crafts such as painting and drawing. it is difficult to compete with all this digital and graphic stuff. We should not have to adapt you can't really if you don't "feel" it.

you know, i have made diff kinds of art most my life... but usually when you get employed as an artist, you are not making your own art. You are usually doing some graphics, or design work for another who needs your skills only. Therefore it becomes just another job.. The problemn is then it is hard to do your own work later, Because then your own art becomes more like WORK... !
i say just do you own stuff and make money elsewhere. also for some reaon i think the UAE are always rich and dont need to work much, like Kuwait people only work 3 hours per day. on your profile i noticed you are from there. is this not true about wealth from there?

yeah the country is very rich. but I'm not a citizen here, I came here to work, the good thing here is they don't levy you taxes on your salary or any compensation you get from working. And those local citizens here, they're really paid more than is necessary, and every basic need is freely available for them.

I have made good money - but it entirely depends on how well you market yourself. You don't market, you don't get paid. Simple.
most artists are not automatically good at marketing etc, preferring to get on with the art work itself and that is a big mistake you MUST balance the two sides of your business or else it becomes something you just do for yourself.
There are some great books which will help enormously - the one I use is the "Artist's and Graphic Designer's Market"
There is a similar one put out for writers.
These books are full of resources - names and addresses of where to tout your wares plus lots of other information that is necessary to plot your way through this field.
GOOD LUCK!

It's about salesmanship as much as anything. You have to treat it as a business, not be like many artists (not just painters, I mean writers, musicians, etc you name it) and act like it's wrong to care about the business aspect or like it would make them a sellout.

They have artistic skill, but they lack marketing skill that brings money. Among Hindus, there is a common belief that Laxmi (the goddess of wealth) and Saraswati (the goddess of studies/arts/knowledge) cannot dwell together. Thus, persons with artistic skills either remain poor, or live a rich life under some rich person's sponsorship.

I make some money doing scrapbooks for other people. I usually charge $200-$300, depending on the size. Although not alot, it is something for doing what I love as my hobby.

I think that artisitc expression has to be tied to function for it to be a good income stream.
I have been toying with the idea of painted perfume bottles as one way to combine function and beauty. Most people who are rather artistic will go into interior design for their bread and butter money, or similar ventures.

I agree, a combination of artistry with function does work and paid-off. Thanks for sharing.

It depends on artist, there are artist which skills are most appealing to the mass than some other artist. There were also different kind of artist, like me, I'm graphics artist designer which is now in demand for outsourcing, so it depends on time and performance.

here in asia there are many artists who are poor and the style of their art or more importantly category of their art is fading away, still they cannot stop themselves, its like a thrust for an artist, so I dont think that its really is a source of income as compared to the indulgence and thrust.

Generally, an artist's heart really doesn't involve monetary aspect in their arts. If you love art, everything doesn't matter at all.

As I have always said anyone who draws can make money some way some how. My friend's father sells his artwork and air brushed shirts and sign paints to supplement his retirement income. I have a friend that sells his doodles on shirts at flea markets. The ways to sell art are endless.

Good. The thing is, we have the talent, so inorder for people to know this, we have to go out and tell them. That's it.

most artists are not even know about till after they die. And the good ones make allot but I don't think it very steady work Grafic artists can make allot and I see jobs for them all the time I guess it just depends on how flexible your art is

I make a little money with my photography and i think making money with art is possible but also difficult. You need to know who your market is and how to gain customers.

You can be the most talented person in the world, but if a) you don't market yourself or b) you're not very well liked you're hard pressed to succeed in this world. There's something to the cliche` "It's not what you know, but who you know."

I think people these days tend not to see art as a proffesion, more as a hobby -- many talented artist don't even attempt to profit from their skill, as they believe it will be too hard...
