i just went to a library one day to check out new books and novels, strangely i found noting new there,on questioning the owner of the library i came to knw ht ppl these days do not prefer books rather they prefer cd's and vcd's .he said that even the course books are being replaced by cd's and dvd's.
i was really anoyed by this fact..books have their own importance but i guess thy are losing their imporatnce and eventually book reading wud no longer be a hooby for upcoming generation.
what do u feel that computers wud replace books or wud books still resume its importance.

Yes, computers have replaced books. I still read a lot of books; however, once e-books start becoming more in-play, I will turn to them. I read a lot faster on the internet then I do with a book. I think people will stop reading books because they want answers quick.

Yeah.. You are true cute angel.. One of my friend has got retina holes due to spending too much on the system. It not only spoils the eyesight but also infects you with inrectifiable health problems...
Regarding your topic, I dont think the books have lost their charm. Even now I see lots of my friends buying novels and other ceritification books. I think computers can never replace the books, not atleast in our generation.

I can not see that e-books are harmful, just often condensed and you can not get a full novel. How in the world could you ever truly read and enjoy a book such as a long Stephen King ( who I often say gets diarrhea of the word processor)book sitting in front of a computer...maybe with a laptop...But lets face it a computer is cold and unfulfilling under the cover with the lights down low and the wind knocking at your window....and the ghouls tugging at the coverlet!
No thanks give me my book!

I really hope that computers never replace books. I love reading and use my library as a source of reading material at least once per month.
What I do think might be in danger are newspapers as a source of reading. I find it much easier to login to my local news sites than pay for the paper.

I guess the fast world needs a fast information and the internet is the best place to get it. Books become just the secondary source of information right now.

It´s the world we live in, I read a lot of books in a digital format like e-books, it´s easier, we spend hours and hours sitting on front of a computer so that´s the way we have to read some interest matters. But books always had an will have a very important part in this world.

I sell books for a living and Thank God, they have not lost importance at all. Just look around - Barnes & Noble, Borders & Amazon are all modern big businesses that have gotten rich on books. Look at the My Lot postings that ask about books and check out the responses. Libraries are seldom empty and in no danger of going out of business. My library is ALWYS packed. Of course the computer stations are usually full but that just proves how well books and technology do co-exist.

PS Sorry to hear about your library but my library usually gets two or three copies of new books and there is still a waiting list. I just this morning had to put my name on the list to take out a copy of Edward Rutherford's "Rebels of Ireland". They have two copies but they are both out and people have signed up for them ahead of me.

Thank you Very Much IrishEyes, You just proved the point, so articulately, that I have been trying to make all afternoon. My point is that our rural smaller, library may not have the book you want, but will certainly "borrow" It from another library. They do it for me all of the time. You are so right about the enormous money in publishing and book stores. again Thank you.

You have raised a really nice question friend... what i would like to say about it is maybe our books might reduce i mean maybe the number of books might go down but to say that computers will replace them i just cant agree to u over it.Ive got some worthy points u wud like to notice:
(1) To use vcd's ebooks and computers the foremost requirement is being a computer literate which i fear not everyone is.
(2) To use the computers and to know its functioning itself u need some books to tell u.
(3) Reading books is better then ebooks as they dont affect ur eyes as much as the radiation from the monitor
So i guess computers have replaced some part of books yes but they just cant replace every book

For me computers will never replace books. I tend to get headaches if I am trying to read an e-book. I prefer having a hard copy, something that I can go back to and highlight if need be. Lets face it, not everyone has a computer. I would like to think that books will always be around. Much easier to carry around with me!

it sounds annoying to say i feel the same. but i always read almost all responses in order to avoid writing the same thing. and the fact is i agree with what you say....al of it!! computer will not replace books....or even newspapers and magazines for that matter. i am an ardent lover of printed stuff. infact i love to write more than type.

But that is not true there must be a hard copy. Computers and technology is only as proficient as its writers. If we depend totally on something that is basically wired or run on batteries, we are doomed for failure. Charm is something that amuses us. Having information in written history is the only legacy we can leave generations after us.

I also agree with you that the books are losing their importance in this modern world with the use of computers in every field..I also feel the need of computers while designing my projects or ant presentation..or to find any information I prefer Internet rather searching all books.I feel the biggest advantage of computer and internet is that the information is readily available and also in organised manner..and that too absolutely free.also we can get a vast information from its basics to its depth.via computer but in case of books to need dfferent books for diffeent purposes..
But then the place of books are inevitable and they can't be replaced with any technology..

The books hasn't lost it importance in thesemodern days, but the profressional books are in the pdf format and these are there in which thereis the drastic change which has happened. Only the novels, fiction, non fiction, are still written in the paper format.

There is nothing better than the feel of a book I have been reading since I was young, all my buddies where playing sports while I was reading novels. The use of PDA's and laptops have made it possible to take ebooks with you but you still are tied to the grid. Some have stated that they read faster on the PC but in web design it is a proven fact that people read less that is why sites have white space and short topics and yes PCs can't be good for our eyes and besides who ever heard of snuggling up with your grandson and a good PC.

yes books lost its importance because you can research a lot faster in the internet than reading books.

Let me ask a question...what happens should there be... lets say a natural disaster, the whole country is cut off from the rest of the world.. we have no electricity, all our knowledge was contained on hard drives that we can no longer access. The fate of Americans depends upon the vast knowledge and experience of scientists and doctors and agriculturalists but we no longer have the written word..What are we to do?

the passion for reading was lost ever since this new technology was invented.and it is true that the new generations are drifting farther from the most beautiful thing as a hobby or even more,books...It's a sad fact

Yeah it's a sad fact that computers and the internet has indeed replaced books. I myself would prefer sitting in front of the computer for hours to do all sorts of stuff and research than go to a library to do research or open up a good book to read. I haven't even finished the last book that I started reading 2 months ago and I haven't been picking it up for almost a month I think... It's a sad truth but if possible the love for reading and books should be brought back.

It will be a sad day if computers, cds and vcds do eventually completely replace books.
I find complete relaxion in reading books, which I read often. I also welcome the break from the computer.
Books are still used very widely in schools as well, even with the replacement of computers, and I hope they will continue to do so, for I wouldn't want children to be deprived of the facility.
I think, and hope that books will continue on... after all, it's not always easy to find the exact text you want online, and dvds do actually vary from the book's text. I think they'll hold up though. Books have been around for a very long time, so I don't think they'll disappear altogether.

Books are still important, although the preference of people change, books are always important, Parents should of course guide their children specially in their early age, they should get them to read books to be able to develop their hobby in reading books.

If you go to Books-A-Million there is no indication that books are being replaced. I know that there are a lot of offers that allow you to get books on CD or DVD but I believe that in most cases you can also choose the printed version. I hope that books don't get replaced. I'm 54 and read books on a daily basis. I am in the habit of reading while I have my morning coffee and I'll pick up the book a couple times during the day and get in a couple of chapters. Although eBooks may eventually replace the printed version I don't think it will happen in my lifetime. There has been talk of "paperless" offices for years now but I don't see anything happening just yet. People are just not confident that computers will not crash or that backups will not fail when needed.

It is a fact that now a days the importance of books are going down due to the influence of computer. Because now a days almost all books are avaible either in the form cd's or it can be downloaded from some websites. Moreover that to get a reference about any doubts can be easily explored from the computers or internet by using search windows instead reading a whole book. Its quite natural that ppl will always run behind modern developments. Depending computer is more time saving than a book reading. I never says to replace Computer in the place of Books or viseversa. Books are some invaluable assets whereas computer is a blessing for the modern life. So both has its own importance.

Though the importance of books hs been undermined by the advent of the digital world, but i feel that the traditional source of knowledge still has its own niche in this world....The bookworms no longer prefr to go to libraries to get their copies of bestsellers...instead, they throng markets to buy them...thats why we feel that ppl r not readind books.....but the truth is that the no of books being printed each year is huge....
So whatevr comes or goes, books will remain an eternal favorite among ppl....
