Do you like to debate?

Do you ever get into a discussion that you pick the less popular side just to debate an issue? I don't mean to get into an argument, I'm talking about debating the issue where both sides of an issue are represented? I love to debate and will sometimes pick the opposite side as eveyone else, just to give people another view point. Do you do this? Or do you just stick with everyone else?

yes I like to debate issues, although I do find it hard to take the side that I don't really agree with.
Thats why I like this site because you get to debate different things, but it gets a bit annoying when people take things the wrong way and give you lots of negative ratings.

I don't think that I've ever done this. There've been a few times where I've been tempted, because I can usually at least kind of see the point of view of the other side of any case. But, before Mylot, I really wasn't the type to debate anything, and I still don't do it that much, lol! I really am more of the type to keep my opinions to myself because I'm so painfully shy and have too deep of a need of being liked, to converse about something that could turn into an argument. That's why I'm not much of a debater. But I think that it's fun to try to see things from both sides!! ^_^

I can't debate all subjects somethings I just can't see the otherside. Most of the time though I think that I'm open minded to others point of view. I can understand being shy, I'm usually shy until I feel comfortable around the group I'm with. I also like for people to like me, and then their are other times that I just don't care what they think. :)

I love to debate, but only if I am expressing my own beliefs and convictions. I can't pick the opposite side of an issue and passionately debate it simply because it is against the mainstream of popular opinion. This is why I never enjoyed the debates that we were required to participate in during medical ethics classes. We were assigned to one side or the other, and if I was assigned to the side that I disagreed with, I found it very difficult to passionately present an opinion. I could research the issue and come up with all of the facts supporting the pros or cons of the issue, but if I didn't believe them or buy into them I found it very difficult to be convincing. If I do believe in something or have a strong opinion, however, I love to present my opinions, even if they are completely opposite to what everyone else feels.

Your last line descibes me very well. I have argued on the other side, even when it wasn't how I felt but because the people couldn't even see that their was another side, that always bothers me when people can't respect anothers opinion. Unless were talking about extremes, those I don't get and couldn't argue to save my life as I just don't get where those people come from, I think they were born missing something in their brain that allows them to think logically, lol!

I love to debate. I always take the side that I agree with, even if I am in the minority. My favorite discussions tend to be among the most controversial; gay rights, abortion, religion. As long as the person that I am debating is civil, I really enjoy it. If they start to get stupidly personal, I will turn it off. I do respect the opinions of others, even if they disagree with my own opinions, but debating someone who is intelligent and knowledgable is so much fun.

I completely agree, and tendto debate much of wha you listed also. I have been in the minority on more than one occasion. I wil debate until a person is no longer respectful of others opinions and then I tend to agree to disagree. :)

Oh yes I was always doing this, taking up the position of "devils advocate" simply in order to liven up the debate. It was always interesting for me to take up a position that I did not really support, but to argue it as if I did.

I like to debate, but, I tend to stick to my own beliefs, and then, just go from there. I do not, like, though when a debate, becomes illogical and more like an agrument. Then, it is frustrating and get us nowhere.

I don't like arguments and I hate confrontation. I like a good debate where people are sharing different views and pointing out why they think that way, facts ect... When it turns to yelling I'm out. :)

I state my true opinion almost all of the time. I do not like to fight, but debating is different. So many people get the two mixed up and think they are one and the same. Just not true. I find that my husband thinks he (and his whole family) has to debate everything every one says, just for the debate. Uh Uh, that is not debating, that is being churlish and fighting. I hate that. I hate it when you are always being questioned about what you know is factual. I do not feel that way here, I feel that most people like to state their opinion, and it is done in such a way that most don't even offend others at all. I like that, and I like the fact I can debate and have a mind of my own.

I haven't ran across many that are rude in their opinion. I try to be very tactful when giving a difference of opinion and usually will say something to that fact in my response, so as not to come across rude. I don't like to argue or fight and I agree that debating is completely different than the other 2 mentioned. :)

Once in a while I do enjoy a good intellectual debate.. it kinda challenges the mind, especially when I feel like I haven't really been thinking real hard for quite some time, I feel like a good topic for debate would probably be a good exercise..
But then it would also depend on the person whom I would be having the debate with, cause there are some people that are just the "never say die" type and just seeing them argue and not take no for an answer exhausts me.. haha..

I have met my fair share of those types of people no matter how good of an "argument" you make they never agree that you make valid points for your side.

sometime i do, and sometime i dont depending on the topic i would say. but like you say sometime i pick the other side of the debate just for the fun of it too, but most of the time i agree with the person that post the discussion.

I don't give negative responses to people who have a different opinion than me. I realize that my opinion isn't the only one and that there is always another side. You may feel free to disagree with me in any of my discussions. :)

I do but it has to be something I know about. I can debate the other side with the best of them. It just depends what the topic is about. If I can't debate the other side because it is something I'm really against, then I won't even try.

Point well taken, I can't debate certain things either because I don't get extreme positions, such as racism and segragation.

I am not sure if I enjoy debating. It seems like it is my job to do that everyday to help my husband decide what to do on business decisions. I have to play devil's advocate all of the time so he can see what kind of holes will be poked in his ideas. It gets old sometimes.
If I hadn't had to do this most of the past 10 years or so I would say that I would enjoy it, but I wouldn't ever say that I stand for something that I don't. I would make it clear that I was playing devil's advocate.
I definitely would only debate with people I know if I were face to face. I don't consider myself an outgoing person at all. I get nervous and turn shades of red when I get any attention in public because I am too shy. I do everything I can to avoid confrontation too. I would make a terrible debate team member. Among friends and family is a different story. I like the attention, and will participate in most anything with them.

I'll choose to be on the other side of the argument if it seems the person is ignorant to other people emotions, choices, or plain arrogant and stupid. It's okay not to know, but to be proud of bias is sick. But some people aren't informed so I let them know the other side so they can think more on the issue anc come more to a more knowledgable discussion and impression of an argument. I don't like it when people start strawmen arguments.

I agree with what your saying. Peolpe should be informed of the other side and should respect anothers point of view on a subject. Their is always another side.

i never purposely pick an oposing side to debate. i pick the side i am on. However, i often talk about the other side, so it is represented as well. i really do enjoy debating most of the time.
