Subway

My daughter and I were out shopping today and stopped in at Subway to get a sandwich to take home. I thought it would be fewer calories than McDonald's. When I got home, just for kicks, I looked up the calories for Subway online. the sandwich I had had over 800 calories! Just the sandwich! I looked up McDonald's and you can get a Big and Tasty or a Big Mac for under 600 calories. So you could have a Big Mac and a med fry for about the same as just that subway sandwhich. I was really surprised. I always drink Diet Coke or Diet whatever is at the restaurant I'm at so could have had a Big & Tasty and Med fry for the same calories I had with just the sandwhich.

What was the fat content though? I'm sure subway sandwiches have less fat, considering they hardly put any meat on it.

I agree with you there. All things in moderation. A stead diet of burgers would probably not be a good thing but then a stead diet of only subs is probably not good either. We need to add in the fruits and veggies as well.

It did actually have quite a bit of meat. The website does have the calories broken down into calories from fat as well but I didn't check that.

Like other posters said, it depends on what kind of sandwich you ordered. Cheese, dressing, mayo, balogna, salami, they all add calories. Your best bet is a plain turkey sub, with nothing but veggies on it, for the low fat/low calorie sandwich. :)

Yup, but I'd rather eat cardboard or just veggies! Yuck! I like veggies but I don't like dry bread with nothing on it.

I agree. Cardboard does taste a little better. :) I do add a little vinegar and oil dressing to mine, for that extra kick--If I'm not taking it home. If I take it home, I will wait and add the FF Italian dressing to my sandwich. YUMMY

I think we really have to be conscious with the foods that we buy these days, because we'll never know what are the nutritional contents of the food that we are eating. For me, McDonalds or Subway, they are just the same.

Hi, Eating sandwiches with callorie, Consuming Diet Coke etc.. would not help u in loosing weight, The best way to loose weight is: (1) Brisk Walking at least 45 minutes a day. (2) Avoid Sugar/Potatoes/Rice/Butter/cheese/Oils/Fast foods/Ice creams/soft drinks. (3) Consume Plenty of water. (4) Fix ur menu and eat only at fixed time regularly. (5) Do some Yoga/Meditation. THANKS

Well, if I have to avoid all those foods, I'm afraid I wouldn't stay on that diet long at all. I think cutting portions and trying to watch the calories while increasing exercise is my best bet. *Sigh* I know I should drink a LOT more water but I just don't like water. I'll have to try to do that, though.

That guy Jared was probably eating small Turkey subs without any condiments or cheese.

Not only that but he was walking to Subway for each one. It was something like a mile or two each way. You do that when you weren't excercising before you'll lose weight even if you eat the same food you did before. Most seem to forget that part and think it's just what he ate, it isn't. It was a combination of the two that allowed him to lose so much so quickly.

No, I did not look up the fat because I just wanted to know the total calories. It did list how much fat was in it.

i feel that as long as you purchase food outside, and you have no control over what ingredients go into you meals then it cant be very healthy unless you can see every single prepaartion step by yourself. even then the unhleathy stuff lies in the sauces and condiemnts

I don't think the sauces and condiments are necessarilly unhealthy but they do contain calories. I just read, for instance, that for heartburn, you should take a teaspoon to a tablespoon of mustard.

well i think calories are imprtant to be considered..... but fast fod becomes fatal(fats fatalised) if taken daily or excessivly....... a moderation kept on its consupmtin..isn't gonan matter much!!! and that is somethin that i dun say but the docts say.......

LOL I never really gave a care about calories, i always thought that subway calorie thing was a hoax, but anyways, i always get a foot long pizza sub with extra cheese...yummy! I can eat those everyday :D with a side of mc ds fries lol...

I haven't tried the pizza sub. I'm kind of surprised my daughter didn't order it as she loves pizza! Sounds good to me, the fries on the side.

But its still more healthy I am sure then a hamburger. Plus it depends on which you got. I used to love the meantball one but heard its the one with the HIGEST calories in the bunch! So go for a more healthy one next time, or just a six inch if you want. But I am sure the med fries and burger is way less healthy then what you ate.

Yes, the meatball one is something like 1700 calories but not sure if that is 6" or 12". I had a 6". I'm also not sure how much more healthy Subway really is unless you just get a veggies sandwich but then you could just get a salad at McDonald's with no meat. A Big & Tasty has a slice of tomato, lettuce, onion, Hamburger (of course) and bun (bread). Then if you get a meal at Subway, you get chips instead of fries, meat, toppings and bread. How much more healthy are chips than fries? I don't know.

What kind of sandwich did you get? I notice that the Subway napkins you get with your order has the calorie count for a number of their lower-calorie sandwiches. I guess we'll have to stick to those when we crave a Subway. My favorite is a tuna sandwich and it isn't listed so I suspect that means it has too many calories to be considered a diet meal.

I got a coldcut sub on whole wheat. It was probably even more than the calories count I found because I put mayo and mustard on it with extra cheese. The extra cheese was a really small piece and they don't put much cheese on it anyway.

I think that the Subway commercials are kind of misleading. Yes, some subs do have fewer calories.. but a lot of them do have just as many calories as the Big Mac. They don't tell you that guy on the commercial is probably eating plain Turkey sub maybe with a few veggies. The roasted chicken sub I get with cheese and mayo probably has a calorie count closer to a burger at McDonalds.

Right. They make it sound like all their sandwiches are better than burgers and that isn't true. If I have to eat a sandwich without mayo or anything else on it, (dry bread) I'll pass. I'd rather have a salad or soup.

Subway is a healthy option, but you do have to take into account that some of the options such as mayo and other condiments can cost you dearly. When I eat at Subway I have no condiments whatsoever. Aside from the calorie count I'm not too ken on condiments anyway lol. I have to say I prefer Quizno's. I like their choice of Sandwiches as opposed to Subway, although I know for a fact that Quizno's probably have a way higher count than Subway lol.

I have not seen Quizno's on list but then I didn't really look for it but, yes, it probably would have more calories. Guess then the only reason to go to the sandwiches vs. the burgers is just because you like sandwiches more than burgers.

It's all down to the fillings you choose! Would you have enjoyed a McD's as much? I had one last night and felt sick afterwards!

Actually, I would have rather had a Big & Tasty than the sub. I'm not thrilled with Subway subs. They're expensive and there isn't much in them. I just thought I was saving calories.

Yeah, they put the calorie count on their tissues in some palces. But the count they give you is if you don't include the sauces, the suaces are the killers i think

It has a lot to do with what you put on it, as well as the type of bread that you get. Cheese and mayo, for example, have a lot of calories. When you see those commercials on TV it says in the fine print that the low calories are without cheese and other toppings.

I'd still rather eat from Subway than McDonalds. I nowadays always feel sick after eating their food and I still find the sandwiches from Subway to be much healthier. I do always put all the vegetables on it though, I can't imagine a sandwich without it all.
