Is there any need to compare with your friends or not ?

I've just got puzzled about it now.I'm just wondering if there's any need to compare wiht the friends around u,for instance,on exam scores,salary etc. Why couldn't we just give heartful congratulations on other's success?

How would you tell the person you have spent many years with that you don't feel the same anymore and that you want to move on. How do you get the message across without hurting the other persons feelings?
