Potatoes are the most useful vegetables. Bengal is the highest producer of potatoes in India. Diabetic patients avoid eating them. India has designated them as essential commodities. In winter they grow very well.

In bengal boiled matar is cooked into a popular dish called ghoogni. Along with the boiled matar there is addition to coconuts, use of boiled gram and onion and chillies. It can be eaten with bread as a breakfast.

The yellow pistil of red hibiscus look bright and pretty in winter. I have my hibiscus plant planted in pots in the balcony. Although it is raining in Calcutta, the winter weather is good for the growth of the flower.
