Why do people add numbers at the end of their names?

This is a question that has bugged me for some time. On the internet, why on earth do people (some on this site too) add a bunch of numbers at the end of their name? It seems stupid, pointless and annoying.

I gave up on antibiotics long ago. The last time I accepted one, I came very close to some serious, long lasting side effects. I now treat my occasional imbalances with herbs and common sense.what about you guys ???

For me, deadlines discourage me from digging into and enjoying a subject. If I want to study something, I want to be free to read the textbook and have confidence that I understand the material as completely as I possibly can....
