Robert We have gone that route in the past. It is cost effective in all honesty.We didn't have cable for a while to save and we got some again and we are paying $250 a for basic crap but its truly really expensive and not always worth it .

Robert There are many places that have restrictions. Bigger population more comforts and also restrictions. I suppose it is all a matter of preference. We have a land deal package its not designed by us but it has everything we wanted so its a nice compromise.

Robert hoarders show is mostly about extreme out of control hoarders. I would say save the things from your list they are useful items as you said that may be needed later but only keep a actual useful amount. Take the excess and sell it or donate it.
