I am sorry to hear that you had Dengue Jemina.. you survived that and you'll survive your hair loss too. The hairloss is, most probably, because of your prolonged serious illness. You can improve on your health by taking nutritious food rich in vitamins, calcium and iron. Increase your fruits and juices intake, more salads etc. You'll regain your health and with that you'll regan your lost hair. Don't worry.
You can see more about the hairloss problems in this site

You take your nutritious food with your use of virgin coconutoil .. Your hair will grow back soon. It might be three months you see the results of hair growth, because hair grows very slowly at the rate of about 1 or 2 cms per month, as per the person.
Coconut oil is the one which we all use for our hair. But be careful, do not over massage your hair then you might again start losing hair. Ok

it could be dear. some of dengue make our body metabolism geting down and it also able to make some fever for our body which it could make our hairs getting loose in some amount. but in my opinion. loosing hairs not only happened by dengue and fever. it could be caused by stressing level that you have or unmatching shampoo that you used with your head skin.
i wish everything going well at this moment dear

You Know when I take a shower I don't always wash my hair because shampooing everyday is not good especially for my case I have dry hair. So I only apply virgin coconut oil if I'm going to wash my hair too. Otherwise it would feel too hot and sticky especially if you live in the tropics.
If you are experiencing hairfall at the moment, I strongly recommend you use virgin coconut oil. Just apply it on your scalp. Dab a drop of oil on each of your fingertips and massage them to your scalp. Leave it for at least half an hour before you shampoo it or take a shower.

Awww, so are you okay now? Is the dengue over with? Are you okay now? Has your hair come back? Why does this stuff even exist? I'm sorry that you had to go through that. So do people have blood transfusion because of low white blood cells that the disease causes? Thank you very much

Yea, I'm okay now. Typically, dengue lasts for 5-7 days. It could be deadly but thanks God I came out alive. Dengue virus causes platelet to stop producing. I was almost brought to the ICU because my fever was not going down and after my first and second transfusion the platelet dropped even lower so I had another transfusion. But as what the doctor said, 5-7 days is the usual confinement. So on the sixth day I went home. If you want to read the detailed story you can go here: http://devotionsandreflections.today.com/2008/09/17/why-me/

Hi Jemina,
Im glad I found this discussion booard. I also had dengue last July 2008 and had blood transfusion too.Yah, it was so scary at that moment.. I got same problem too. I also noticed that my hair is falling badly after my confinement. I tried using Lawat shampoo as my friend recommended it and now its almost empty yet my hair fall is getting worst..Im thinking to cut my hair but my friends insist that I shouldn't..I tried to had a hot oil using coconut oil but i just do it when I have time since it takes a lot of work. Well I guess I should have that virgin coconut oil. I am just sooo worried. I used to have thick hair but now I can see already my scalp...but thank's for this..It makes me feel better now.

Hello Athenalady, I'm glad this discussion have helped you in some way. I do hope the virgin oil will stop your hairfall.
By the way, I see that you posted this about a month ago. I'm so sorry I was away from myLot for quite a while. Anyway, if your hair has stopped falling you can stop using virgin coconut oil for one month and then do it again.

Hi Jemina.
Thanks for asking the question. ím losing hair, is it because of dengue'
I got dengue fever at the end of Oct 08'. I went to hospital and my blood count was at 31. I was lucky that I did not need blood. Last week my hair started falling out and I can see my scalp. I'm going to try the vco. Hopefully this will work for me. I dont want to lose any more hair!!

Its good that you've recovered from dengue. As far as the hair fall is concerned, I don't know if it could be because of dengue, but I know one thing, that in women hair fall could be because of some gynecological problems. I advise you to go an see your doctor, he me as well ask you to get some tests done.

Well, if we ask the authority themselves they will say that Dengue itself is not the cause but I think as the body goes into a deep stress during this illness then it causes hairfall. Also I read that high fever will cause hairfall. Since dengue starts with high fever so I believe it causes hairfall.
The hairfall has stopped because I used virgin coconut oil.

I have never heard of Dengue before so I looked it up. Wow what a horrible illness. Being an RN I know that anytime your body goes through a very stressful illness like you had it can effect your hair. I would get it checked out before I lose any more hair. You can be losing your hair for other reasons also.

Thanks for your response Teapotmom. At least it made me understand a little bit. I asked other nurses too but I realized that they're not the right person to ask especially if they had never experience this. Nurses are nurses and not patients. Anyway, I thank you for explaining a bit about my condition and I think you're right. But I will also take your advice and see a doctor for this.

Hi Jemina,
Glad to hear you're feeling better.
I got denuge hemorrhagic fever in January and ended up in hospital - very scary time. I ended up getting hepititis and cirrhosis of the liver coz of the dengue too.
In the past few weeks I've started to loose my hair, I went to my doctor but he said he couldn't do anything and said that I'm lucky I'm still here.
Everything else is getting better now but I hate losing my long hair! I was wondering if you think the virgin coconut oil would be a good idea to try, how's it working out for you?
Thanks in advance

Hello Crazy, sorry to hear about the complications you got from your dengue. I had the same case and it was Grade 3. I was almost taken to the ICU because the first two blood transfusions didn't make me better but instead the platelet continued to drop even lower.
Anyway, good to know you also survived. About your falling hair, try VCO as it really helped me solve my falling hair. Before you wash your hair, apply the VCO on your scalp. Put the oil on your finger tips and massage to your scalp. Leave it for about an hour before you take a shower. I hope it will work out with you too.

Hi Jemina,
Thanks for your response.
My dengue was at stage 3 too. I think that maybe the more severe forms of dengue put so much stress on the body that there is a more noticable loss of hair a few months later.
I'll get some VCO and will try that and will let you know what happens.
I was just about to get a drastic hair cut, above my shoulder or just below my chin, I think maybe I'll hold off on that until I've tried this for a few weeks.
Thanks again,
Lynsey

I contracted dengue in Manila last May. Thankfully I survived. My hair has been falling out like crazy too. I used to have thick hair and now I have lots of bald spots. I was told to consult a dermatologist. Or should I just try using virgin coconut oil like you suggested. Has your hair stopped falling? This is getting me down. Please help me understand why this is happening.

I'm so glad to have found this post! I've been losing my hair for the past 2 weeks and I recovered from hemorrhagic dengue 3 months ago. I hate to sound vain, but my hair is my pride and glory, and to be losing it has me crying and anxious all day long. I will definitely try to coconut oil as well as getting my bloodwork done (as instructed by my doc) and going to a dermatologist. The thought of having to cut my hair has me down :( I'm thankful to read that I'm not the only one!

The past 1 week, it has finally slow down, although i'm still losing it every day but it has improved at least 50%, I believe i will fully recover and so do all of us. So don't worry !!
I take Iron Supplement, apply hair tonic on my scalp and use hair loss control shampoo, that's all i do.

sad that this is happening to you but good thing you've survived dengue. a teenage friend of the family did not... well, let's not go into that. but maybe, your hair falling could be a side effect of one of your medications? am not really sure but you just have to consult an expert for this. good luck!

Hi,
I too had heard about this,it is might be mostly due to the deficiency of vitamins. In our place in Kerala in India we use mostly coconut oils for hairs and it gives healthy hair too. I hope there are many ayurvadic oils or natural oils. If is too bad it might better consult a hair specialist. I hope it might be better to use natural oils rather than those shapoos other with chemicals.

How is your hair growing back? I lost about 30% of mine with dengue fever in February 2007, and it's just starting to get full again now. Do you still feel physical weakness or any symptoms from the dengue?
I kind of feel like it took a toll on my immune system. It was a week of hell, that's for sure.
Hope you're well!

After using VCO for two weeks the hairfall stopped and a couple of months later the hair grew back. You can imagine those growing hair especially on top of my head, I looked like a chick who was starting to become a hen. hahah!!
Apart from the falling hair, there's nothing else I could think of really. And I'm thankful to God for that. Maybe because of my lifestyle. I don't really eat junk foods and soft drinks but I must admit I sometimes eat chocolates. But most of the time I only lots of fruits and vege. Another thing is that after my hospitalization I stopped working and stayed home to rest and let my body recover fully.

Hi Jemina
I know you posted this question 4 years ago but i was just wondering if your hair went back to normal after six months of having dengue? I had dengue in Jan 2011 and its now April 2011 and i have really bad hair loss and i want it to go away! and was virgin coconut oil a big help or did you use something else?
Thank you :)

Hello hafsah,
my sister and I we had dengue too, you can read about our situation in some of the last postings.
I can tell you that you can calm down... we had very bad loss of hair too after dengue. but now its like it was before dengue. we tried virgine coconut oil too. its good for the hair but in my opinion it does not help against the loss of hair. Just eat healthy try to avoid stress and relax.
We got dengue in Bali and my balinese doctor had dengue twice. and he told us that at the second time he lost all of his hair. but it came all back after some time.
i unterstand your fears and i wish you all the best.
