We are all aware of the $4.00 gas in the US but did you realize that bananas are, long a cheap fruit, may soon hit $1.00 lb? Apples and oranges have risen in price even though they are grown in many places close to home. Ecuador is the world's leading exporter of the fruit has been ravaged by flooding. Banana priced are getting higher. I love almost all fruit and hate the fact that I can't buy as much as I like due to the cost. If I can't buy any other fruits I can always buy bananas, right? Well with the prices going up, maybe not. Too bad.

Yes it is too bad and due to the rising gas prices all food not only fruit will be going up because it is trucked in therefore gas goes up so does everything else. I just don't know where this is leading but there's going to be a lot of people in a lot of trouble financially it's already starting for me and I know I'm not alone.

Me too. It makes me wonder what is really behind all these increases. The people who are getting hit the hardest can't get a straight answer from anyone.

Banans here are .69 cents a pounds I used to pay about. 38 cents a pound for them. I hate to see them go up to $1.00 a pound I will not buy them very often if they do I already don't buy apples very often as they are $1.49 a pound!

I know how you feel. That is the main reason I don't buy much fruit any more. And to think of how far away bananas have to travel compared to our own domestic fruits, this may be a bad sign.

I love bananas also. It is a sign of the times that prices on all goods are going up. Part of it is due to higher oil prices and part is due to so many natural disasters. I just saw on the news this morning where an Illinois farmer lost his whole crop because the levee near his land broke and flooded his farmland.

I have been watching the news about the floods in Iowa and Illinois and it is just another blow to our already weak economy. Our fruit is getting higher too. Bananas here are still lower than other fruit at roughly 60-70 cents a pound. Strawberries and even our Texas blueberries are over $2.00 a pound.

Wow, $1 a pound is kinda high for bananas. I've seen them range from about 35 cents a pound to 69 cents a pound. I also hear there is also some kind of disease that's affecting the type of bananas that most people want to eat, too. Well, I will have to switch to another fruit if bananas go bye-bye. I tend to buy more raisins when this happen. They have a little more potassium and about the same amount of calories per serving.

You are so right. Bananas are high in potassium. People with high blood pressure are encouraged to eat more fruit and vegetables that have potassium. I could eat several a day. When my kids were little I could not keep enough around the house. I like raisins, too. Wonder when they will go up?

Yep, unfortunately prices are going up everywhere. Nothing is safe anymore. Economists are blaming it on the cost of fuel. Here in Ontario, we pay around $6.00 per gallon of gas (hard to say exactly as it is up and down daily, quicker than the toilet seat in our house), lol) I say it is a good time to go on that diet, I am always thinking about starting. Soon, I won't have much choice anyways, it seems! I have no idea how young people just starting out with little mouths to feed are gonna do it. Good lucj to them!

So true. My two of my daughters have kids and I don't know how they do it. Of course they only have one car so I guess that helps some.

I don't think just bananas that is getting expensive. With the oil rise that makes the gas price rise, all transportation cost will be increasing. If the transport rise, the cost of goods will rise, too. The bad thing about oil rise, it will rise all production and transport cost. Not only in US that everything are rising, in Asia and Europe are also the same. The third world countries are the one hit the most. To make it bad, the global warming is also giving a bad weather for crops.

That is very true. It is funny that for such a long time the banana has been one of the cheapest fruits imported from such a long distance while our own home grown produce, comparatively speaking, has risen faster and more in price. Who knows where this will all end?

I think things are just going to get worse. With natural disasters and the increasing price of oil there seems to be no end in sight for price increases of everything we use. Thanks

Hi jillmalitz, because of the boosting up of the gasoline hike. The price of everything does increase accordingly. Even the cheapest fruit in my place, banana has gone up. Luckily they increase slightly only as they are grown locally otherwise I would face the same problem as you to eat the rather expensive banana here.
Among all the fruits, banana is a tasty and nutritious food and convenient to be taken. It contains high content of starch and could be taken as a staple food. I do take bananas as a meal sometimes, if I really couldn’t spare time to prepare my food.

So true. Not only the cost of transportation but the farmers are switching from the crops we are accustomed normally use to crops that make more money so some are becoming more expensive because there are less of them.

They are up to like $.59 cents a pound here. That's expensive for bananas! I can remember when they were 10 cents a pound! I suppose with the price of gasoline going up, we can expect all food prices to soar. Time to start gardening!

yeah, I remember when they were really cheap. Now with gas prices and natural disasters like flooding in farmlands prices will go even higher. I saw that Mexico is subsidizing the price of some of their food to keep the prices lower. That won't happen in this country.

I love eating bananas also. The bananas here are 69 cents a pound. The last time I bought some they were all bad in the inside.I even bouhgt them when they were still green. I payed $200 for 5 bananas. All the fruit here is so expensive and most of it dont even taste good. I wish we can have better fruit in our stores. The price of eggs went up also.

I know how you feel. Around here some stores have been quality fruit than others. I don't care much for the fruit that WalMart sells cause it doesn't have much flavor and doesn't seem to last very long before going bad. Some other local grocery stores have better quality fruit but it costs more.

i'm not sure what the per pound is local, but i do know a small bunch is now $2.89,where it used to be $.69 a bunch,so that's a large raise no matter how you look at it.

You are paying about what we are paying in Houston. From what I read that Ecuador which is our largest importer, just like us has experienced severe flooding. Most of the fruit we have here is already expensive. I love to eat fruit but with it costing so much I have cut down a lot.

I've noticed the price of bananas going up too. Last time we bought them, they were 69 cents a pound. I remember when we were getting them for 25 cents a pound in recent years. Probably not ever again? It seems like once the price goes up on something, it doesn't come back down.

I agree with you. I have seen a lot of changes in my lifetime. Cars, homes, food prices go up. Now a cheap car costs more than the first house I bought.

Dear jillmalitz, that price rise of fruit also happens here in china. It really distrubs me ,for I am also a fruit lover. Sometimes, the money for two apples can affords me quite a full meal. Even so ,i often starve myself to buy some fruit, hehe!

I understand how you feel. Some fruits are very filling, like apples. I have always enjoyed eating fruits and vegetables and I could easily make a meal with them. Pretty soon a veggie meal will cost as much as an expensive steak.

It's not surprising that the cost of fruits has also risen. It's probably because the cost of gas is up which would push up the cost of fertilizer and other stuff. Even though bananas are more expensive, it still comes out cheaper than other fruits. It's one of my favorite fruits actually because of the price, taste, and nutritional value. With almost everything increasing in price, I think the best solution is to just buy fruits that are in season.

You are right. I agree that one way to fight this is to buy fruit in season and if possible from places like farmers markets. Usually at different times of year we have commercials on tv telling us to buy imported fruits which are in season in their countries but now we may find those too expensive.

Yes, the once bananas which are ones the cheapest of all fruits will no longer be affordable to poor people soon. Here in the Philippines the once P20 per kilo has risen up to P40 for good bananas and I'm afraid it will even rise up.So, Sorry for banana lovers like me!

Me too! It is sad how this is happening. I have heard that even rice which is a stable in many poorer countries is becoming scarce and expensive. This may just be the tip of the iceberg.

I agree. The trouble is that most other fruit has always been more expensive. With the price of almost every thing going up even the cheap staple products are getting expensive. It is affecting everone. Of course it may not bother the wealthy that much but if they have their own companies they are paying more but they are more able to handle the extra costs.
