Some kids kept bothering an 89 year old woman by kicking their football into her yard. She told them if is came into her yard again, that she was going to keep it. Well guess what! She was warned by police to give the ball back and then she was arrested for theft! Oh my gosh! "The potential maximum penalty for a petty theft conviction in Ohio is six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000." She goes to court next week. Crazy!

Well, if the kids are going onto her property to get the ball, aren't they trespassing???? It can't be theft because they willingly gave it to her by putting the ball in her yard! How insane can people get????

Hi.
I think that is too much for a penalty for an old woman. It should be the parents of those children who should be reprimanded for not showing respect to the elderly. Our children today are really suffering from degradation. Each day, their morality is falling and some of us don't even care about it. Or we neglect it because we are so busy with our work or personal life.
Discipline starts at home. If it is not present inside the home, then much more that it will not be present outside the neighborhood or society. This is the duty of parents, to create a conducive place where children may grow up healthy--both in physique and character. Because one day, this children will become also old and might suffer what they are doing to the old lady at present.

uh oh, I'd be in major trouble! I have neighbors that leave their garbage in my yard all the time, bikes, broom handles, and garbage. Most of the time I return it, though. The last trip through my yard, I found a HUGE knife laying in the middle. Not cool when I have little kids. I took it and through it in the closest garbage dumpster.
You know, they do say that possession is 9/10 of the law. If it's on her property, it is hers. I hope she's found not guilty. Maybe, she should file a counter suit for harrassment.

That is too bizarre! I would have thought she could be charged with theft but that the police would and could back her up alittle with trespassing charges or something. Those kids shouldn't get off scott free either. And her charges are too harsh. For petty theft under the circumstances. Weird!!

this is ridiculous... i will do the same thing like the old lady as well if the children do that to my house... whatever is in my house is my property... especially if they had been warned by the lady... i pity the old lady... she has to return the ball to them everytime they do that... i hope she will win the case and she can also file a charge against those kids for harrasment... take care and have a nice day...

I think the police were wrong.
I think that if she had a big dog in her yard and it tore up the ball - would that be considered vandalism? Some kids when they first moved into our neighborhood, tossed a toy into my back yard and the dog distroyed it. I warned them not to put toys over my fence because the dog would destroy them. they have never done it since. I would say she's probably tired of them doing t his and kept the ball to stop it - I think the police should've just told the kids that they should stop annoying the old lady and to get a new ball!

i wondered when somebody'd get around to suing a biddy for that nowadays.
man..when i was growing up,if they did that they'd be arresting half the neighborhood of biddies.
we had a couple that were known for keeping what came into their yard.our parents just told us "well stay away from there, then" they didn't sue.

I think the woman was within her rights to keep the football. Her lawn is her personal property and she has exclusive rights to it. The kids did not need to kick the ball on her property. They have no business playing on her lawn. If she gets convicted in this case it will be a Travesty of Justice. She should be commended for not backing down under police threats, and should be compensated for her trouble.

oh my god. did they actually do that. this is crazy. the yard belongs to her and she is penalised for owning the yard. what is this world coming to. the police should just warn the kids not to play football and kicking the ball in the yard. if i am a criminal, i would use this as an excuse. i intentionally kick the ball in the yard, i climb over to look for the ball and at the same time, help myself to whatever valuables there are. if i am stop, i would say i am here for my ball. or if they want to be crazy, why not arrest the football for housebreaking or house trespass. whatever it is, it just does not make sense

That is absurd and I think I have heard it all. I wonder how she could have handled it differently. Maybe she should have spoken with the parents first. But, I do not feel that she should have a police record over something so petty. I do not blame her I blame the children for not listening to their elders. So, the children were the ones distubing her and she pays. What kind of world do we live in?

What is happening in this world? Little old ladies getting arrested for keeping a ball that was allowed into her yard? This is stupid. If it happened to come into my yard, I would just give it back to the kids, with a warning. Don't let this happen again, or you might not get it back.

That is what I would do. Keep the ball, and they can come begging to me, and promise not to do it again. I would figure if they kept kicking the ball in her yard, they really did not want it anyway. They would have to prove it was an accident. And I suspect they did it on purpose to have an excuse to have her arrested. I wonder if there were valuables in her house, that they wanted to get at.
The police were stupid in arresting her, and idiots for listening to those boys.

I saw that. I actually was on the side of the old lady. Some kids make no attempt to control things and are not even apologetic or polite when they want their stuff back. I might have done the same thing.Mean old me.

Hello estherlou. It sounds ridiculous that the 89-year-old lady be taken to jail for her keeping the football bothering her by the kids. I think that the police are supposed to protect the 89-year-old lady from being bothered by the kids. What is wrong with the police? I am sorry for them. Have a good day, friend.
