A teacher is charged with felonies for the death of her two cats

A teacher left her two cats in her apartment with no food because she was busy with work, family and friends. The cats starved to death after being left alone for a month and then their corpses rotted for a month before the super found them. I absolutely believe she deserves to be charged with 2 counts of felony cruelty to animals. It would make me happy if she would do some jail time. Its time to put our foot down about animal cruelty. What do you think? Here is a link to the news article http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/palmbeach/sfl-news-teacher-killedcat-bn040109,0,1981137.story (not a referral link).

I agree with you. How does one have a cat, let alone two cats and not noticed one has not feed them for a while let alone one month? That beyond cruel and well she does deserve some jail time.

Evidently she was afraid to go home because of an abusive relationship. But she could have sent someone over to get the cats.

Well that can be a good reason not to go back to a house, but there must have been someone who was not afraid of the person she was living with to go and check on the cats.

Seriously or how about taking them with her when she left?

How HORRIBLE! That sub-human should be treated like her cats! How dare she consider herself human! How long does it take to feed the cats? and if she really didn't have time, she should've at LEAST taken them to a shelter - heck, being put to sleep would be more humane that what she did!

Some people just don't deserve to be responsible for other lives. I wouldn't hire her as a teacher.

she doesn't deserve to breath the same air as normal people - oh, I have an idea - lets lock her up with that Vick guy!

Why did she not call the animal control people and the police, give them the keys and tell them to take her cats? Then if there was someone threatening her, the police would have scared him off, and the cats would have been alive. There are ways out of a situation. And she is a teacher and should have known better. She should have been charged with animal cruelty.

I am more of a dog lover myself. Why there was this dog running loose in our neighborhood and I had to see if it was all right. I am sure that there were people who would have looked after her cats. Did she not have relatives?

I think anyone who is cruel or negligent with their pets should face just as harsh criminal charges in the same manner if one was cruel or negligent with children. If this jerk knew she was going to be so busy for so long, why didn't she make arrangements for a friend to take care of the cats? That would have made more sense

Seriously? There is no reason to abuse anyone, human or animal. And there are strong laws against child abuse, but child after child slip through because people won't stand up and report. But there aren't strong enough animal cruelty laws. And you would think with the link between violent criminals and animal abuse you would want to catch these people early.

Did you read the crappy things written by the columnist Gerry Stein in that one section? Think that's his name...he thinks we should get "real" since it's only cats...and we shouldn't view what that woman did as abuse but be more concerned about child abuse...I see NO difference...abuse is abuse

I'm a bit on the fence for this one. I don't feel like it was fair that her abusive relationship affected the cats in such a horrible manner, but she was trying to get out of a dangerous situation herself. What I don't get is if her apartment was danger zone, then does that mean that the person that she was in a relationship in the apartment, or was there just a chance that her boyfriend could pop up at her house? If it's the latter, then yes she needs the jail time for cruelty to animals and be restricted from buying or adopting pets and there should be a fine for friends who might try to give her a kitten from a fresh litter also.

It doesn't sound like the ex was in the apartment because the corpses of the cats rotted for a month and I hope no one would live with that.

To be honest it would make me VERY glad if she was sent to prison even...In my religion, a woman will be sent to hell for cruelty to a cat while another will be sent to heaven for giving a dog some water to drink in the desert... Seriously, if you're not gonna take care of your pet animal, why did you purchase one to begin with? I'd definitely want to see that person in jail...being 'busy' is not an excuse for killing a soul.

Indeed. She could have even taken them to the human society or something. There was no reason for her to let them die like that. And if she is a teacher, do we really want her around children?

I would not want her around my little sister for example...if she cannot be merciful to a helpless soul like a cat, who knows what she is like to children...

There is no excuse for leaving cats unattended for a month. If she didn't want to take care of them, she should have found a home for them. Period. I'm with you cruelty to animals charges should be filed with jail time.

Are you serious, Aurone? This woman needs her head examined! By no stretch of the imagination should she have believed the cats were able to survive on their own for so long. In my opinion, she is guilty of gross negligence in regards to her animals. I really hope they throw the book at her for being so selfish and uncaring.

me too. I already think the laws are too lax. I am glad they decided to charge her with the felonies.

that definitely be considered as cruelty. does it mean that her cats were just inside the home and can't get out to other places to find some food. cause we do have stray cats around. and when they get to find foods here they will just go to our neighbors and will eat there and actually it was our neighbors cat in the first place. but cats here don't really have owners. so when the cat decided to stay on the other neighbor we don't try to get the cat any more. anyways, it is just too cruel to leave the cat hungry. when i see new stray cat looking for food in my place i will just get some food in my fridge and feed them. though i could not manage to feed them all cause they get too many when i try to feed all of them. i will just drive away other cats and let them look for food at other houses instead.

She could have let them out, called animal control, taken them with her. These cats didn't have to die.

I hope she goes to jail. People sometimes are so cruel, that it is hard to believe. Where was she? How can you be busy to the point you forget you are responsible of someone's LIFE?

I don't think she forgot them as much as she was afraid to go home. Evidently she thought someone else was taking care of them but didn't bother to check to see if they were. She is still responsible and she should still be charged with animal cruelty because they were her responsibility, but I don't think it was like she was running around and just forgot them.

I think when you take on a pet, you take on a life. They are in your hands. Like a child. Poor things. What a horrid way to go. Yes, Jail at the very least, is what she deserves.

That is outrageous! I am busy with family, work and friends too, in fact I had three jobs at once, and a boyfriend who lived across town. Guess what? I was nearly in tears when I had to leave my cats alone for two days. I worried all day long the second day that they somehow ate all their food and drank all their water and they would starve or dehydrate. That was for two days! I could never imagine leaving an animal for more than that. This past weekend I had to go up to my boyfriends parents house, which is 8 hours away. We left friday morning at 8am and we were back sunday night around ten. I left my cat with a salad bowl filled with a 3.5 pound bag of food in it and another salad bowl with two gallons of water in it, and I still worried all weekend! When I got home I hugged my cat for hours.

I often go and visit my family for a couple of weeks (I hate leaving my cats behind, but my family lives far away and won't let me bring them with me) but I hire a cat sitter and I am even one of those that calls the sitter to see how they are doing. I am obsessive about the health of my kitties.
