What sounds make you fall asleep?

I was a bit wired when I came home from tonight's Intro to Psychology class. A couple of my students are going though "existential crisis," and we had some interesting discussions during break. At home, I wondered what would be help me get to sleep. In my kitchen, I noticed that I had some dishes in the sink, including my beloved smoothie container. I realized them that the sound of a running dishwasher is soothing and would help me sleep. So now, I hear the dishes "running," just as I did in childhood days, and I also hear the rain outside. I will not turn on the stereo. Any bets on whether I'll fall asleep quickly? Are there certain sounds that help you sleep?

Rain always puts me to sleep. I'm sure you went to sleep without a problem.

@just4him Mine isn't particularly loud, but I CAN hear it. I think it just sounds "homey" to me.

@TheHorse Y'know, I just thought about it, but I ran the dishwasher the other night before going to bed and didn't have a spot of trouble getting to sleep.

Sounds like that would work well. I personally love screeching car tires, revving engines, people slamming car doors, and people talking at the top of their lungs outside. I honestly do not know how I ever get to sleep in the neighborhood I live in.

The sound of gentle rain on the roof, the noise of the running water in the little brook in front of our home, the breeze moving the leaves of the trees. Nothing artificial makes me sleepy. I really dislike the noise of the dishwasher, it's loud.

@TheHorse The brook runs all the year, in summer there are the snow that melts up in the mountain. There is always running water in the brook. Birds are very happy to go there to take a bath.

Ah, the brook would do it for me too. Does it run all year? Our creeks dry up in the Summer.

Do you know that the different location where the rain fell on the roof create different sound?

@id_peace Yes, that's true. I like it when it rains hard and drums on the roof.

Sometimes it is the drone of the TV..or in this case the kindle. Any kind of low electronic hum like that will allow me to sleep.

Natural water sounds do it for me too. A toilet that doesn't shut itself off does not qualify.

Nope, I wouldn't have bet either way, if I had been here when you posted this discussion... Now, it would be easy enough to check your activity and see how long you were on myLot before signing off. No, there aren't any sounds that help me fall asleep... I wish there were. As it is, if I can't fall asleep, the only thing that helps me is for me to imagine the color black and keep thinking nothing but the color black. In a few minutes, my alarm goes off to wake up and get ready for work!

@TheHorse I put on my white noise machine to block out the sounds in the building but it still takes me a long time to fall asleep.

I wonder if that's what therapists put outside their offices so people outside can't hear the conversation.
