Is it worth posting on controversial topics?

I have made a conscious decision to stay away from topics like religion (especially religion), politics and any other discussions that might cause arguments.
MyLot is a really nice place to post .. until one of these subjects rears it's head and then everything changes. These topics have even been the cause of people leaving the site.
Do you post on controversial topics or do you leave well alone?

I'm an easy going person and of course I have my views like everyone else but I don't want to fall out with people.

@sprite1950 I have seen some users really fight for religion here. Better to skip that topic.

@LadyDuck I do. As soon as someone starts quoting from the bible I'm gone.

I often do. I think controversies are for keeping brain active. There are two ways of living. One is doing it mechanically, and other is understanding the principle of why we do what we do. When we are young, we are fairly busy so accepting many things mechanically comes easily, and is also the need of the hour as we are working and should not disturb ourselves. But when we still have some thoughts later on, why not?

@sprite1950 Unpleasantness is because people word it wrongly. I have had good heated debates and no harsh words were exchanged with many people who have continued to be my friends.
I will give you an example. I had long ago taken a stand that Hitler was not directly responsible for final solution (because Newsweek magazine some 30 odd years ago had mentioned there was no evidence linking him). I have argued, and most people accepted he was guilty. I needed the "missing link"...believe me at least 4 posts ...nobody came to remove my ignorance. It is only in the 3rd post that I read something which made me read more and more and finally I came to logical conclusion. I need to be convinced. If I am not convinced, I can't take sides.

I suppose so but I've seen a bit of unpleasantness here when it comes to discussing them and that puts me off.

@sprite1950 Your choice, and it is not a bad choice as I have noticed that discussions about politics and religion are getting usually less responses.

That's true but I know what it feels like to be bashed on an online site and I don't want to feel like that again. Easy going discussions for me these days.

I don't go hunting for such posts but I don't shy away from them either. I am more about learning and exploring to feed my brain. Gives my brain exercise as well and keeps things interesting. Why should I stop learning, exploring or doing things that interest me just because there are people who have a problem keeping an open mind and can turn any discussion into an argument? LOL!
I have been called names many times by such people. I can handle that and if worse came to worst I can always report or block them.
I haven't done any post on religion yet. It's been 2 years since I am here. Maybe someday if I feel the need to.

That's a good attitude to have. I'm probably a little oversensitive and need to toughen up. Until then I shall stick to friendly discussions where I know people won't want to argue with me.

Well it's the opinions that seem to cause the problems. If I can see someone challenging me I usually say I given my views and have nothing more to say, then leave the discussion.

Define "controversial". What may upset one person may roll like water off a duck's back for another person? If I have something I want to discuss I start the discussion. If other people also want to discuss that's great! Otherwise, it's just me talking to myself and that's fine too. As long as I'm following the site's rules for content and courtesy, I'm not leaving!

@cmoneyspinner Hello you .. you're going to get a ban for this comment on FC
Controversial .. a subject likely to cause public disagreement with many differing views .. like religion. People get heated when discussing this topic because there are so many different religions and each person thinks his is the true one. Also atheists and agnostics will often give their view which can upset some people.

@sprite1950 - I just signed in today and see that the Administrator has written a long post about "censorship". Here I was thinking about controversy when I should have been concerning myself with censorship.

Exactly ..it should not be my way or the highway. It should be a process that helps us to understand each other. Agreed based on our personal experiences we would be inclined to hold on more firmly to a stand that we have arrived. But here, I learned that not every drunkard's family is ungrateful.

Politics and religion are just a topic to me.If anyone doesn't want to comment those they will just skip.but people make big deal to this. Here we have rights to post until we harm or hurt others. The world is running because of those topics so no problem to talk about those and get some knowledge. Some people just want to know other religion's practices. This is my opinion.

@sprite1950 I agree..it doesn't stop there. But we need to develop a more tolerant language and way to understand each other. Ability to respect? Isn't the absence of it the cause of all problems humans face? So if there is a chance to develop that ability, why not?

It rarely stops at that though. because some don't respect the views of others. Perhaps there should be a special section here for controversial topics.

I am here for fun and socializing and uplifting, so I tend to avoid battles and controversy. I will converse about faith and religion, but I will not fight about it or call names if someone believes differently than I do.

I've noticed that sometimes a discussion can be about something totally unrelated to religion and then someone will start quoting from the bible.

@Bluedoll I didn't know much about the Housewife saga and I don't know who left the site because of that discussion. I have been bashed on other sites, not on a religious post, but even though I told myself it didn't matter, it did hurt and although I think I did a pretty good job of defending myself, I was aware that many people had seen the attack which made me feel uncomfortable.
I wouldn't say I was a shrinking violet but it did make me more wary of posting on discussions where people become heated and are likely to throw insults.
You are absolutely right, it is social hurts and not topics which drive people away.

@sprite1950 I'm not a fan of Islam's holy book (I read the bible) so completely understand when something religious is put on the table however at the same time understand why it might be being done. Still not sure if it is the material or subject itself that so terribly controversial until people start disagreeing to something?
I don't think a topic should be made taboo because something negative happens.
I never called housewife a name or belittled her personally in anyway although I don't think much of atheism. I thought we were able to interact well at the last of her postings here. I understood her point of view and reason for leaving. I was labeled a moron here a long time ago but still here. It shouldn't happen but sometimes it does which doesn't make it any less hurtful. I think it is the social hurts that drive people off the site and not mere topics which can be discussed by adults unless of course they feel they are not up for it - which is totally okay too.
What do you think?

There are so many kinds of religions. Its easy to offend someone there. And food. I run toward eating clean; little processed fake food for me and that can get the Mac N Cheese crowd irritated if I talk too much about vegetarianism.

I don't like controversial topics (mostly politics and religion). I don't comment on these post and I don't talk about it in my offline life except for a few very close friends. They are private topics that need to be respected and there's no meaning of arguing about these.

@anikoonline Some people will try to bring religion into a discussion that has nothing to do with it though and I think that's where the problems start.

@sprite1950 Yes, I think that religion is someone's personal confidence. I think that we should not convince anyone of our personal belief. It is rather should be about acceptance of the difference in religion and faith.
