Feeling very smug!

I’m feeling rather pleased with myself this afternoon. Earlier I was at a social function which included a quiz. Now normally I am useless at quizzes because they often feature popular music, films and TV programmes, and I know very little about the first subject and virtually nothing about the other two. But this one was a bit more random and I actually managed to answer quite a few of the questions, and even got two of the trickiest ones (and had to argue my case with the rest of the team who were reluctant to believe me – but I was vindicated!) So here are my two favourite questions: In what sport do half the participants have the same birthday of January 1st? and If you were looking at Charlemagne, King David, Alexander the great and Julius Ceasar, what would you be doing?

I went to a community BBQ at a local church today. They gave us each a ticket as we entered and after the meal drew for 5 prizes. The first number drawn was 4 off my number, and the fourth number was 1 off. The other 3 were nowhere near my number.

In Britain (maybe the whole northern hemisphere) thoroughbreds all have their birthday on January 1. I don't have a clue about the other question.

It’s news to me! I follow the horses too, but not too closely.

You've got it! Is that not the same in Australia?

@Fleura I just checked and the horses' birthdays in Australia is August 1st due to foals being born in our spring (September/November).

The first answer is horse racing. I'm not a horse-racing aficionado but I did know that all thorougbred horses are considered to be born on 1st January of the year they were born, so if one is born on 31st December it is considered to be one year old already! That was one of the pieces of trivia that I remember from my horse-obsessed youth (and of course the other half of the participants are the jockeys). The four historical figures are the 'kings' on playing cards, I confess I wasn't totally sure about that but I did know that the characters on the cards are supposed to represent some historical figures and it seemed like they were likely candidates!

@fleura Is the first one a horsey thing? I believe thoroughbreds are all allocated 1st January as their birthday - silly way to treat a horse. And the 4 kings - are we playing cards here?

I have to admit that I'm clueless. I enjoy trivia and usually am pretty good at it; but not with these questions. Have a good day.

Because I didn’t know, I have checked the other replies before giving mine. If the first one is horses birthdays, I’ve never heard that before. However that only answers part of the question because why is it only half the participants, unless of course you are including the jockeys? You can see I’m thinking out loud here. 2nd one must be the kings in a pack of cards, but again I’ve never heard that. Well done for knowing this trivia!

Indeed, @xFiacre knew both the answers, and so did @LouAvul. I'm not a horse-racing aficionado but that was one of the pieces of trivia that I remember from my horse-obsessed youth (and yes the other half of the participants are the jockeys). As for the playing cards, I confess I wasn't sure but I did know that the characters on the cards are supposed to represent some historical figures and it seemed like they were likely candidates!

The last four are playing cards. Not sure about the first question. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Well done! The first answer is horse-racing; all thorougbred horses are considered to be born on 1st January of the year they were born, so if one is born on 31st December it is considered to be one year old already! No idea how that tradition started.
