We watch a lot of DVD's,
and we really enjoy checking out the edited clips, out takes, behind the scenes, etc. But PLEASE TELL ME, Does anyway really watch the movie with the commentary?
Is it just me? Is it because maybe the few I've checked out were just boring? Is that part of the cost of the DVD, (royalties or contractural pay for the actor/s or director commentary?
Seriously, even just a quick reply, do you view the commentary track?

I also watch a lot of DVDs and I completely understand what you mean about the commentaries. So many of them are so dull. I think the problem lies in the person who is doing the commentary. Some people can be brilliant film makers, but are not so good at talking about their filming and thought process. Some commentaries however are great! This is especially true if you a a fan of the Firefly tv series. While some of the episode commentaries are rather dull, there are some where the people talking are either hilarious of just filled with some really good information. If the movie or tv show is one that I'm really into, I will give the commentary track a try, but I do have to admit that most of the time I give up. Either that or I will leave it on as background noise while I do somethign else.
So I guess my answer is yes, I've been known to watch commentary tracks. However, I don't make a habit of watching them.

We'll make that a yes then. Maybe I will start checking out more of the commentaries and see if they sound good and interesting. I think it will be evident within the first few minutes if the person is a dull speaker or if they have something to say that will contribute to the movie.

I watch a lot of movies on DVD too, and very recently I all the 10 seasons of FRIENDS on DVD. I don't watch the commentary part when it comes to movies. I'm sure I won't enjoy it. But when I watched FRIENDS, I watched a few episodes which had the commentary, it was fun to know certain facts about the episode. I really have no patience to watch the commentaries on movies, maybe only the behind the scenes and a few deleted scenes.

I've never watched the commentary on a movie, and for some reason I've never actually given it any thought. I have however watched the commentary on some of the tv shows I have brought as box sets. I've actually quite enjoyed those too, especially when it comes to writers, creators, directors, or producers and you hear about why they did a scene a particular way or why a particular person was cast. So, I'm actually pretty surprised why I haven't done any movie ones. Unless of course my favourite movies haven't had them, and I haven't felt passionate enough to watch any of the others.
I do however watch deleted scences, outtakes, bloopers, making of and behind the scenes for any movie I enjoy.

Well, you sound pretty typical of the responses I've received and read so far. Most people haven't watched the commentaries, but there seems to bea a majority who do appreciate the deleted scenes and the out takes on the top of their list, followed by other special features like behind the scenes, but the commentary does seem to be finishing last.
I guess most are interested in just the entertainment portion, others like to look under the hood, (commentary). The best analpgy I can think if is my interest in computers. Most people buy one, and are happy to get on the internet, play games, etc. Me? I have to take the screws out, tinker and change the components or build my own, tweek the registry etc.
This has been interesting and a learning experience, thank you for your input.

I view the extras...first I watch the movie and if I liked it...and I have time on my hand..I watch the extras then.
Sometimes its surprising to know, what the producers were thinking when they came up with a scene etc...sometimes its interesting, I watched the extras of LOTR...also the commentary, it was nice.

Thanks for the response,
You are on par with most, including myself. We do not normally watch all the extras, but we will watch the out takes and behind the scenes stuff. However I never throught about the LOTR, series, I might want to check that one out one of these days. I can see where that would be good.

you're welcome...
the movie with the directors comments were really insightfull...they also said what they were initially planning and why they had to change etc. also some additional info for instance that the actors were injured while they were running (chasing those orcs) stuff like that...won't tell you more...you'll have to watch it yourself.
It was one of the best extras I seen in a long time.

I actually listen to the commentary for "The Goonies" because they reunite almost the entire cast and the reminisce on their experiences in making the film. It was really great and very funny.
Another good one is "Dude, Where's My Car?" because Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott are already so funny that it was really a good laugh to hear them talk about their experience behind the scenes when they made the movie.

I like to watch the movie with the commentaries. I like to hear about why they put a particualr scene in or what exciting trivia they can hand out. It makes it more interesting when you are watching what they are talking about.
I really loved the commentary for Girl Interrupted. It added some insight to the movie that I didn't really know. I learned things that I wouldn't have otherwise know and that is alwasy a good thing.
I think in general, commentaries are a good thing because it allows us to go inside the mind of the director and cast and get a whole new view of the movie. I find it very interesting.

Thank you for the reponse,
Now I have to ask you, do you watch the movie first, then the commentary, and after watching the commentary do you even go back and watch the movie again since you now have a new insight into the movie?
It would seem as if you watch the commentary first, you would have more curiousity and a deeper understanding of the movie when you do watch it, but then again watching the commentary first it could spoil the end of the movie.

I dont watch it. I tired before but it is indeed boring and i dont think i am watching a movie at all. I think the commentaries are for editors or for critics. Maybe it is an added feature too for those under consideration for nomination or soemthing.

Thanks for the response,
Yes, The ones I've seen were boring also, however I'm hearing from some that some commentaries are actually funny and interesting, just depending on who's doing the commentary. You may want to look two post up, someone has actually revealed a useful purpose to the boring commentaries. They can serve as an antidote to insomnia.

I tend not to view any special features. I must confess to never having been that bored.

I'm curious about why you think someone would have to be bored to watch the extras. I think it's the other way around. I'm interested in the movie making process, so the extras are very enjoyable if they're well done.

Yes, I agree...
I especially like the out takes, which are normally hilarious. Some movies the behind the scenes are fascinating, and I haven't even mentioned the trailers up til now, we love cchecking out the trailers to see what is up and coming that we might want to rent.
Thanks for the added input.

bambi had a very good bonus track. but for the most part, the bonus is just the movie companie's attempt to milk more $$ from the consumer.

Thank you for the response,
I had always considered the price of the DVD went up because of the extra features, but something in the way you worded that makes me start to question if the extra's might lead people to buy DVD's to replace videos that don't have these features. Hmmm

We ALWAYS watch the commentary track. My partner is in the industry so he's very much interested in how the movie was made and what the actress and actresses as well as crew members have to say about it.
He gets his inspiration and his determination to succeed by setting high standards for himself and listening to what these people found that works for them.

OK, this is the first truly motivated reason that has been posted yet for a reason to watch the commentary.
As you know by my original post, I haven't watched a commentary, at least not on purpose and not for very long. Do most commentaries have more than one speaker, or is it normally just one of the actors/actresses, producer, or director all the way through? I'm really curious to know.
Thank You,

I'll often watch part of the commentary, to get a feel for whether it's interesting and adds anything. Some of them are really lame, like the people don't know what to say.
But some are really good and add interesting detail about the movie, like why they shot a scene a certain way, or that they had planned a scene a certain way but changed it.
Watching an entire movie with the commentary on is something I rarely do.

Thank You,
I'm somewhat surprised. You are the second in 5 people who watch these. I thought the number would be much less than this, 2 out of 5 would be 40%, however you say you rarely watch the whole commentary so would that make it 1.5 out of 5 instead of 2/5? LOL

Have you ever heard the song, "Too much time on my hands", LOL...
5 DVD's a day? Or am I mis reading that and that is on holidays?
It looks like the poor commentary is the most overlooked feature on DVD. Thanks for the input, and I like your movie list.

I watch the extras for most movies, but whether I watch with the commentary depends on the movie. Some just aren't going to have much that is interesting. I watched Kingdom of Heaven with the commentary on the other night and it was worth it. I'm interested in why some directors make paricular choices about the script and how the movie is shot, etc. Directors like Ridley Scott actually teach me about movie making and sometimes make me appreciate a movie more.

Thank you for the response,
OK, you are the first response that actually watches the commentaries, but maybe we who don't have learned something from what you've had to say. I'll have to remember Ridley Scott, and maybe at least take a short view of some commentaries to see if they look interesting.
Thanks again.

I own OVER 200 DVD's I know them well. I do watch commentaries but I've made it a rule ONLY if at least a few people in it play main characters in the movie. Its really fun to watch them IF I have time to see what they say. I will do it for movies I REALLY love and dont mind sitting there. But again I need time for it too :)) so if I am bored...
I think they probably make them for fun. I dont know if they get extra pay for it but they might.

I generally just watch the movie, not even the making of or the other goodies that come on the DVD. I only have a single dvd that includes the commentaries of the director. I think, I watched like 10 minutes of it, then turned off the commentaries. I found them very distracting.
