Is Akira were it all started?

I hear people say they were influenced by akira, and others say that without it many other things wouldnt exist, such as the matrix film So is this true or an overexageration? Any thoughts?

Sorandra Akira helped anime out a lot, but there have been other anime around before Akira came to america, such as Speed Racer.

Sorandra Tintin? Isn't that French? If so, that's a character I haven't seen around in a long time. I also like the Archie and Veronica comics, they'll always be around. :) As for something different, I'm a big fan of the Garfield comic strips!
