TravisE The short answer would be that people feel the need for a spiritual element in their lives, but are not fond of the tainted reputation religion has. The modernist, and post-modernist, adage of "I'm spiritual, but not religious" speaks volumes in this regard.

TravisE Just to clarify: I do not mean that religion is important because of the wars that have been fought for religious reasons. Rather, I mean that obviously people consider religion important because they have fought wars over it.
