Why God fearing?

I live in the southern United States, and I hear that people are God fearing Christians all the time. Not being Christian myself, I'm curious why this should be the case? Christianity is a peaceable religion, at its heart anyway....

My brother-in-law recently had his phone stolen. First do the people realize that the phone will soon be shut off? and Second most service providers can "lock-out" that particular phone's seriel number. making it near impossible...
