Self serve vegetables in supermarkets with brown paper bags?

Does anyone know why supermarkets dont sell vegetables loose, with brown paper bags to put them in rather than plastic bags? I guess the answer has to do with marketing, but I for one would be only to happy to go back to a DIY...
