There is a well known saying: You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. Families can, at times, be some of the most unpleasant things in this world. Arguments and hostilities within families can go on...

Just before Christmas I sent my eldest son a gift through the post. Unfortunately, he didn't get it - it had mysteriously disappeared somewhere in the postal system. Despite complaining to the relevant department the parcel wasn't...

My first pet as a child was a mouse but my family have also had dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, tropical fish, budgies, parrots and probably others I've forgotten about!
We haven't had all of these at the same time...

Apart from a couple of near misses when driving my car or walking near traffic I think my scariest experience must be when something tried to choke me in my bed one night.
I felt hands around my throat but could do nothing about...

OK, I wouldn't actually use a hammer on my new printer but believe me I have certainly considered it over the past couple of days!
Why?
Because the damned thing refused to connect to my laptop! Yes, I know, that probably says...

Over the past few days our home has been the scene of unrivalled upheavel and chaos. We are having a major internal revamp involving painters and decorators, plasterers, carpet fitters and a whole host of other tradesmen - some of...

Having a bad day? Here's one way to cope - my home-made stress relieving kit! Simply print it out, cut it to size and stick firmly to any hard surface. I'm not suggesting you actually should follow the instructions but I suppose...

I've just read a post from one of my Facebook friends about a group who are posting online messages encouraging people to take their own lives. They are even giving tips on the best way to do it! What's wrong with some people that...

And probably most of you have too! I have always opened a banana from the stem end where it is attached to the tree but, idly looking through YouTube, I came across a video of a much better way to open a banana. Apparently, this...

It's so sad when friends have a serious falling out. Friends of ours have had just such a serious happening with other friends of theirs (whom we do not know). The situation has become quite heated and Facebook has become the...

Do you sometimes find yourself drawing meaningless doodles? Many people do when they are trying to think or concentrate on something. Apparently, it's a way for your brain to put the problem on the back-burner for a while and...

My wife and daughter both like them but I've never seen the point. The patterns are very complex and I don't have either the patience or the time to complete one. If I had that much time to spare I'd rather spend it on...

I can hear all you good ladies out there sighing and commenting about 'Wimpy Guys' but according to no less an authority than Harvard Medical School there are sound biological reasons why 'Man Flu' may actually be a real...

Ask anyone to name a bad habit and most people would say 'Smoking'. Yep, definitely a bad habit but there are many other habits which could be described as bad: eating with your mouth open, interrupting a conversation, correcting...

My schooldays were pretty much a waste of time but then I didn't do myself any favours and didn't try very hard. I left under a cloud in the middle of the school year with no qualifications (I'll tell you about it sometime)....
